About Josh
I am a First-Class Biochemistry graduate from the University of Manchester, with over two years of cancer research experience at leading institutions including the Mayo Clinic and the CRUK Cambridge Institute. My work has focused on glioblastoma, brain metastasis, and animal-free organ modelling, and I will soon begin a PhD in cancer research, further deepening my expertise.
I also teach because I understand how easy it is to fall into the trap of memorisation-based learning. During my A-levels and early degree studies, I initially relied heavily on memorising content, which limited my progress. It was only when I began to have fun with the material — linking chemistry to biological processes, exploring beyond the curriculum, and focusing on true understanding—that everything started to make sense.
This experience fundamentally shaped my approach to learning and teaching. I have since learned that deep understanding not only outperforms memorisation in long-term success, but also naturally improves retention and recall. My goal is to help students develop these habits early, so they can build confidence, think independently, and succeed throughout their academic journey rather than relying on short-term revision.
I genuinely enjoy tutoring as it allows me to share this perspective and support students at the beginning of their own scientific development, helping them grow in both ability and confidence.

I take a structured and student-focused approach to tutoring, tailoring each session to the individual’s goals while ensuring a strong foundation in core concepts. I specialise in breaking down complex biological and chemical processes into clear, step-by-step mechanisms that students can actively work through and understand.
A key focus of my teaching is bridging biology and chemistry. Rather than treating them as isolated subjects, I help students see how chemical principles underpin biological systems. This not only clarifies difficult topics, but also helps students connect ideas across the syllabus—leading to stronger understanding, improved retention, and better exam performance.
My lessons are closely aligned with the student’s specific exam board and curriculum, ensuring everything we cover is directly relevant. Alongside this, I use a range of effective learning methods including diagrams, targeted educational resources, and active recall techniques such as quizzes and exam-style questions. This approach goes beyond memorisation, helping students develop a deep and lasting understanding of the material.
Lessons typically last 60 minutes and are structured to maximise progress, including review of previous content, focused teaching of key concepts, and guided exam practice.
I hold a First-Class BSc (Hons) in Biochemistry with Industrial Experience and have over two years of research experience in cancer biology at internationally recognised institutes.
Throughout my degree, I regularly supported peers by explaining challenging concepts and guiding them through difficult material. This experience, combined with my academic training, has allowed me to develop clear and effective ways of communicating complex ideas—skills I bring directly into my tutoring.
My lessons are suitable for GCSE and A-level students studying biology or chemistry, as well as early undergraduate students seeking support with core concepts or exam preparation. I am particularly well-suited to students aiming for top grades or those considering a future in biomedical sciences.
