About Katrina

I am a huge lover of history, languages and literature, and how art, culture and learning all overlap. My 'day job' is as an Assistant Curator, International Art at Tate Modern. Alongside my current role, I maintain a freelance writing practice, and have published reviews and essays for publications such as Elephant Magazine, Burlington Contemporary, and The London Magazine. I am also one-third of the creative collective When They Meet, hosting regular events and a signature supper club with guest collaborators including chefs, facilitators, writers, artists and event programmers.

Outside of work I love to knit and crochet, read, do the crossword and sudoku, see films, and go dancing!

My specialist subjects are English, History, History of Art, Reading and Writing, and I have additional experience tutoring in Latin, Maths, Science (Biology, Chemistry and Physics) and Drama. I have worked in various formal and informal educational capacities, including as a private tutor; as a Learning Assistant for Kumon; and as a freelance workshop facilitator for places such as the Unicorn Theatre, Bold Tendencies, Art in the Park, Bermondsey Project Space, and for OneWork, an initiative by Lindon Gallery in collaboration with the Social Commission and Artist in Residence Charity.

As a private tutor, I have worked with young people from Reception through to GCSEs, from a mix of academic backgrounds. Alongside curriculum support, I have worked to prep students for public exams, working with children as a revision aid, on Verbal and Non Verbal Reasoning, and pre-university psychometric assessments and aptitude tests. I am familiar with the examination boards AQA, Edexcel, OCR and Cambridge.

My lesson length varies depending on the age of the young person. I like to construct lessons out of blocks, or sessions, corresponding to the optimum concentration time of the young person and the desired lesson goals - this might amount to two blocks of 15 minutes for a 4 year old; or 4 blocks of 30 minutes for a 16 year old.

I am a big believer in meeting students where they are, as I find this helps to create a calm, safe and mutually respectful environment that facilitates better attention and learning. Every student is different, and I like to grasp the manner in which they learn best via reference to the VARK model - this enables me to tailor my lesson delivery, so all students progress and feel empowered. My techniques might include colour coded notes, diagrams and mind maps for visual learners; incorporating movement, using role play or associating gestures with key terms for kinetic learners; or writing mnemonics and songs, creating recorded material for revision, or incorporating reading aloud and presentations for auditory learners.

I am an advocate for situating learning within a wider context; I will often suggest additional activities or bring different frames of reference into my sessions, that expand the world of the subject beyond the syllabus. This might take the form of recommended reading, exhibitions, documentaries or podcasts.
