I have found since your dealing with creativity that comes from within that has to be applied to a computer design program, the best way I have found is starting with lessons on what the various design tools do, have from the very beginning a student taking notes, a notebook or computer note taking, practice and more practice, for those already familiar with the design programs a more targeted approach on what they would want to learn, example: Filling objects with patterns, copying line work art, etc.
