About Amelia
My approach to teaching saxophone centers on blending disciplined technical training with the encouragement of individual artistic voice. I emphasize the fundamental components—breath support, embouchure control, finger dexterity, posture, articulation, tone production, and intonation—that are necessary for healthy, expressive playing. From the start, improvisation is a key element, introduced through ear training, scale exercises, and creative phrasing activities to foster spontaneity and musical creativity. Music theory is taught in context, directly connected to the pieces and improvisation students engage with, which helps make concepts clear and relevant. Repertoire is tailored to each student’s interests and goals, encompassing jazz, blues, pop, and classical styles, to maintain motivation and personal connection. I guide students in setting realistic goals and developing effective practice habits that fit their lifestyles, encouraging steady and enjoyable progress. Technology is integrated as a valuable aid, including recording software, metronomes, and backing tracks, supporting self-assessment and refinement. A highlight in my teaching has been witnessing students grow from beginners into confident performers who improvise with joy and authenticity. My aim is to cultivate saxophonists who are technically proficient, creatively expressive, and deeply connected to their music.

Saxophone teaching, to me, is about unlocking both the technical capabilities and the creative spirit of each student. I focus on breath support, embouchure health, clear articulation, finger dexterity, and tone control to build a strong, flexible technical foundation.
Alongside these skills, I introduce music theory, sight-reading, and ear training early to develop comprehensive musicianship and prepare students for improvisation and group playing. I tailor lessons to each student’s musical goals and preferences, whether that’s mastering bebop language, exploring blues phrasing, grooving with funk rhythms, or interpreting pop melodies.
Improvisation is a major focus, broken down into accessible components like scales, melodic phrasing, rhythmic variation, and expressive dynamics to nurture confidence and originality. I incorporate technology such as recording apps, slow-downer tools, and backing tracks to support engaging and effective practice sessions. Performance coaching is woven throughout, covering stage presence, anxiety management, and emotional communication.
I create a positive, encouraging learning environment where students feel empowered to experiment, make mistakes, and grow musically. One of my proudest moments was working with a student who grew from an unsure beginner into a confident performer leading their school jazz band. Ultimately, my goal is to help every saxophonist develop into a skilled, expressive musician who enjoys the journey of creative self-expression.
