About Sophie

I’m an experienced Maths and Physics tutor with over 20 years’ teaching experience, a PhD in Atomic and Molecular Physics and a First Class Honours degree from UCL.

I teach students of all abilities, from GCSE and iGCSE through A Level and university-level Maths and Physics, as well as university entrance exams including MAT, PAT, TMUA, ESAT and STEP. I also teach SAT and ACT Maths.

2026 A-Level results: 26% of grades were A, and 95% of my A-Level students secured their first-choice university place.

My approach is about understanding the student as well as the subject. I listen, work out what is getting in the way, and find different ways to explain things until they click. I want students to understand why something works, not just learn a method, and to become confident enough to spot and correct their own mistakes.

I’m friendly, easy-going and, importantly, I like making lessons enjoyable. I want students to finish a lesson thinking: “Actually… I think I can do this.”

I offer a free first full lesson, because finding the right tutor is about getting the right fit for both student and tutor.

I’m also a Chartered Physicist and have Advanced DBS clearance.

About the lesson

My lessons are tailored to the individual student. There isn’t one way to teach Maths or Physics, so I start by understanding the student, identifying what is getting in the way and then finding a way to explain it that makes sense to them.

I work with students of all abilities — from rebuilding missing foundations and confidence to stretching the brightest students towards the highest grades. I teach GCSE, iGCSE and A Level Maths and Physics, university-level Maths and Physics, and university entrance exams including MAT, PAT, TMUA, ESAT and STEP.

I want students to understand what they are doing rather than simply learn a method. We work through problems together, but I also encourage students to spot their own mistakes, explain their thinking and eventually tackle problems independently.

And I like lessons to be fun. I use real-world examples, analogies and different approaches to make difficult ideas click. My aim is that students finish a lesson feeling they have learnt a lot, and thinking, “Actually, I can do this.”

The first lesson is free and is a full lesson, because I think the relationship between tutor and student is really important. It gives us both a chance to see if we're a good fit.
