About Dean

I have spent eight rewarding years helping more than 280 students develop their mathematical abilities and intellectual confidence. My academic background includes a degree in pure mathematics with additional training in mathematical pedagogy and cognitive psychology. I began tutoring after noticing that many capable students were failing mathematics not because of intellectual limitations but because of anxiety and poor foundational preparation. I have worked with students preparing for GCSE, A-level, IB, and university entrance examinations, as well as adult learners returning to education after career breaks. My students have pursued careers in engineering, data science, finance, and academia. I am particularly skilled at helping students overcome mathematical anxiety and develop the systematic thinking habits that lead to consistent success. I design all my own practice materials and maintain a digital library of over a thousand original problems. Outside of teaching, I enjoy chess, mathematical puzzles, and writing about the history of mathematics. I believe that everyone has the capacity for mathematical thinking and my mission is to help each student discover their own mathematical voice.

About the lesson

My mathematics teaching is built on the principle that mathematical thinking is a skill that can be cultivated in everyone through the right approach. I begin every tutoring relationship with a comprehensive diagnostic conversation to understand where a student feels confident and where anxiety or confusion begins. For calculus I teach the fundamental concepts of limits derivatives and integrals through geometric intuition and real-world applications before introducing formal definitions and proofs. Linear algebra is taught through the study of vector spaces linear transformations and matrix operations with emphasis on the geometric interpretation that makes abstract concepts concrete. I emphasize the development of problem-solving heuristics teaching students to recognize patterns decompose complex problems and verify solutions through multiple methods. Every lesson includes spaced retrieval practice to strengthen long-term memory and interleaved problems to build flexible thinking. I teach students to write mathematical arguments with logical coherence and precision preparing them for both examinations and university-level work. For exam preparation I provide extensive practice with past papers while teaching time management strategies and techniques for avoiding common errors.
