About Elizabeth
Hi! I’m a veteran educator with over 30 years of experience teaching English both in the classroom and online. While my professional life is rooted in the world of literature and rhetoric, my "real life" is just as busy! I’ve been happily married for 35 years and am the proud parent of four grown children who are all out in the world thriving. Having raised four kids, I know firsthand that every student is a unique puzzle, and I’ve had plenty of practice helping different personalities find their path to success. A Master of Words and Arguments In the academic world, I’m known as a Master of Debate and Rhetoric. I’m passionate about English and speech communications and helping students turn "just a paper" into a powerful, persuasive argument. Whether we are dissecting a classic novel, prepping for a high-stakes debate, or writing a killer essay, my goal is to make the process engaging, logical, and—dare I say—fun! Life Beyond the Books When I’m not teaching, you’ll likely find me: Diving into a Story: I’m a total bibliophile, but I’ve also embraced the digital age—I’m a huge fan of podcasts and audiobooks. Solving Crimes (from my couch): I’ll admit it—true crime is my secret obsession! There is something fascinating about the logic and storytelling behind a good mystery. In the Kitchen: I love to cook and experiment with new recipes for my family. At the Game: I’m a certified sports junkie. If it’s baseball or football season, I’m locked in. I love the strategy of the game just as much as the excitement. Why Work With Me? I bring a mix of deep professional expertise and parental patience to every session. I understand the pressures students face today, and I’m here to be a mentor who helps them navigate English and Speech with confidence. I’m not just a teacher; I’m a coach who wants to see my students thrive just as much as my own kids have.

My Teaching Philosophy: Personalized Mastery
I believe that teaching is not a "one-size-fits-all" endeavor. With over 30 years of experience in both physical and digital classrooms, I understand that a struggling high schooler needs a completely different roadmap than an advanced university student or a professional honing their rhetoric.
My approach combines literary analysis with classical rhetoric. I don't just teach you what a text says; I teach you how to dismantle it, understand the author’s intent, and use those insights to build your own powerful arguments.
A Typical Lesson Plan
While I customize every session to your specific goals, a standard session usually follows this flow:
1. Contextual Review: We begin by discussing the reading or writing task at hand, ensuring a deep comprehension of the themes and historical context.
2. Critical Analysis: We dive into the text. I guide you through close-reading techniques to identify rhetorical devices, tone, and subtext that others might miss.
3. The Objective: We identify a specific "bottleneck"—whether it’s interpreting a difficult passage, a complex essay prompt, or a speech delivery hurdle.
4. Active Engagement: I use the Socratic Method, asking guided questions to help you arrive at the solution yourself, ensuring the knowledge "sticks."
5. Practical Application: We move from theory to practice—drafting a literary analysis, performing a speech, or debating a specific topic in real-time.
What Sets Me Apart
Most tutors teach English as a set of rules to follow. I teach English as a tool of influence. My background as a Master of Debate and Rhetoric allows me to bridge the gap between reading and speaking. I show you how to take the lessons learned from great literature and apply them to persuasive speech and modern communication. I make my students not just better readers, but more confident, articulate human beings.
Who These Lessons Are For
I specialize in students from High School level through to University and Professional levels:
The Struggling Student: Who needs help demystifying complex literature, improving reading comprehension, and building foundational writing confidence.
The Advanced Scholar: Who wants to master the nuances of rhetoric, advanced literary theory, or competitive debate.
The Professional: Who needs to sharpen their speech communications and synthesize complex information into clear, persuasive points.
