About Joanna
I`m an experienced tutor and researcher specialising in Data Analysis using R, Developmental Psychology, Child Mental Health and Cognitive Psychology. I have a bachelor's degree in Physiological Sciences from the University of Oxford, a master's degree in Psychology from the University of Manchester, and a PhD in Computational Psycholinguistics from the University of York. I have worked as a researcher in the Medical School at Newcastle University and in the School of Psychological Sciences at the University of Manchester.
Although new to this platform, I have been working as a private tutor since 2016, and in that time I have tutored students in A Level Psychology, Higher Psychology, A Level Biology, GCSE Biology, Higher Human Biology, Higher Biology and National 5 Biology, as well as degree-level students in Psychology and Biomedical Sciences. I have received consistently good feedback from students and parents, and I find it very rewarding to see my students achieving their grade aspirations. I am an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, which means that I am qualified to teach at university level.
My tutoring approach depends very much upon the individual tutee and their specific needs. My first port of call is always to sit down with a new student and have a chat about their aims and aspirations. When I know exactly what they are hoping to achieve, and how they feel about the subject, then we can work on a general lesson plan together.
When tutoring university students, I always do extensive prep beforehand to ensure that I know exactly what is required by their syllabus, as this can vary a lot between universities. I may therefore ask you to share with me details of your course handbook/reading lists etc. so that I know what material you have been taught.
My main aim as a tutor is to inspire the student with enthusiasm for the subject. Exam success is important, but I believe there is so much more to effective learning than that. In addition, exam success is much more easily achieved when the student is enthusiastic about what they are learning.
COVID POLICY: in order to protect you and all my other students, some of whom have vulnerable family members, I always wear a mask during face-to-face tutorials. I would also ask that you inform me if you have any symptoms that could be covid (cough, fever, runny nose, headache, aches and pains, etc.) on the days we are due to meet – I will not charge for late cancellations due to illness. If, at any time, I have similar symptoms, I will also be sure to inform you.

Joanna tutored my son for his Higher Psychology exam. She was well prepared with a lesson plan. She knew the course content very well. She gave structured support on how to answer the questions. She had a lovely manner and helped give my son confidence before sitting his exam.
Joanna tutored my daughter with her psychology A level. She was patient, understanding and took extra time explaining complex aspects of the subject. Which gave my daughter confidence. Joanna was always flexible with dates and times to fit round my daughter’s schooling schedule. I cannot recommend her enough. A complete professional in her tutoring and methods of teaching.
