About Meghan

I got started teaching in my high school orchestra program. There was a major deficit in what students were able to play as compared to other ensembles in our district, so I worked with the students to improve our overall performance. From there, I have gained k owledge of what it means to teach music and I have taken on private students with the Do Re MI project.

I have been working in orchestral settings for the past 8 years, and it gives a lot of knowledge as to how to communicate with musicians and different styles and techniques that will make musicians stand out. I have also taught lessons to people from many different skill levels, teaching people how to read music and also helping then learn how to read solo repertoire and interpret music.

About the lesson

I like to have a preliminary lesson with students so that I can find out where we are starting in terms of experience. I want to make lessons tailored to you, and the first meeting allows me to figure out we can grow and expand your musical ability. This way, I will know if I have to teach a student music theory and note reading, or if we can jump right into advanced techniques, like bow movement and shifting. I can start all the way at teaching how to handle your instrument with care, up to mastering and perfecting classical music pieces and teaching how to add musicality to performances. However, I do make sure that the proper musical foundation has been laid, because the success of any musician starts with the basics.

I have worked with young players, around 9 years old, who are just starting their musical career. I have also worked with those who are going into college and preparing them for auditions.

I would advise any student to ask themselves what their goal for private lessons is. If you want to prepare to reach a professional capacity, I would reccomend a teacher with more teaching experience and a formal degree. However, if you want music to be a fun hobby, I am more than qualified to introduce the basic and teach how to play with accuracy, technique, and musicianship. Your goal for private lessons should reflect in the price you pay for a private teacher. I would also reccomend that you find a teacher who will give you the most well rounded musical experience. Many teachers only have classical training, while finding a teacher who has a diverse background will provide a more well rounded approach to music. By pursuing many different styles of music, it will deepen a students love and understanding of their instrument.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
A student should always ask themselves what their intention in playing is. This could vastly change the pricing range it takes for a private teacher, and your goal for lessons should reflect in the amount you pay. A student should also ask themselves how committed they will realistically be. If this isn't a strong commitment for you, then that should also be a factor in what type of teacher you hire.
