About Maria
Competitive swimmer for seven years and continuing as a collegiate swimmer. Started teaching lessons in 2015, continuing to present. Taught every age from infants (with their parents), toddlers, children, teens and adults. 1 on 1 lessons and group depending on skill level, work ethic and other factors.
My lessons go beyond just basic skills and incorporate stroke performance, safety skills such as CPR demonstrations and basic first aid, lifejacket use (when available), and a stairstep process to guarantee the most thorough understanding of each skill from blowing bubbles through perfecting the butterfly stroke.
English is my primary language. I have taught some entry-level Spanish classes, although I do not speak Spanish myself (using basic phrases and vocabulary specific to swimming). I learned American Sign Language through high school (all four years) and continue signing today although I have not yet used it in a lesson.
I grew up in the water and I enjoy being able to help other people to see why I love it. The most satisfying moments are when a skill finally clicks and I can see a student's confidence level skyrocket; when the look of fear turns into a huge smile and pure laughter.
In 2015 a family friend asked me to teach their child just basics of being in the water, trying to get them comfortable in their backyard pool. I had a few lessons here and there before going through the PPR Certification and starting to teach through the City of Portland.
In 2015 I began giving swim lessons unofficially to family friends' children. In 2016 I was officially certified through the Portland Parks & Rec Swim Lesson Program as a level 2 instructor, able to teach all skills at any age. I have taught at East Portland Community Center since then and have seen many students pass through the levels into the higher, pre-competition groups.

I always start out of the water for a few minutes just getting to know the student. I try to read into what may be helpful and what may cause troubles, such as their learning style, length of focus time and intensity to learn. Once in the water I always start with a baseline test to guarantee the most growth possible.
I have taught across all age ranges and skill levels, from infants to adults and from fear of the water to natural swimmers. I have also worked with children and adults under the ADA umbrella, with prior notice.

Details
Pricing depends on many factors including driving distance, private vs semi-private vs group lessons, and length of session. It also depends on pool fees and equipment usage. I always take personal financial situations into account and will work out reduced pricing if money is tight. For a standard price chart please contact me.
