About Lucas

I lived in Lima, Peru, for 10 years and have worked as a professional translator for 15 years. Thanks to this experience, I can offer insight into many different aspects of the Spanish language, from everyday, informal conversation to work settings and the arts.

I love music, books, and philosophy, so if that's something you're interested in, I offer conversation classes or we can read Spanish-language stories and articles and discuss them together to help improve your vocabulary and spoken and written comprehension, while hopefully helping you to find your new favorite writer.

If you're looking for help with Spanish class or trying to become conversational in a specific field, I can do that, too!

I'm a language nerd. Languages appeal to both sides of the brain at once. There's the structured side, with rules we have to learn to make sense of what we're saying and hearing. And once we have that, there is the creative side, where we can express ourselves in our own individual way.

I like to think it of like music. There are notes and scales (the "rules" or theory), and once we learn those we can improvise, like a guitar or saxophone solo. You do it every day in your first language, and you can learn to do it in a second (or a third!).

I learned my Spanish through immersion in Peru, both in and out of the classroom. I am certified in Spanish as a second language from Universidad Pontificia Católica del Perú, and I have worked as a professional translator for 15 years.

About the lesson

The best way to learn a language is the one that makes you feel excited about doing it. I like to meet with a prospective student for a free 15-minute chat to see what you hope to accomplish. That way, I can tailor things to your interests and needs.

Look for someone who shares some of the same interests as you. Your immediate reason for needing a Spanish tutor may be to help with a high school or college class, but you'll be much more motivated to learn the language and everything you learn will stick with you a lot longer if you can connect the process to things you genuinely care about.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
What are the top two or three things you need from your tutoring sessions? Pronunciation? Grammar? Vocabulary? Conversational practice? While a native Spanish speaker may be a good fit for more advanced learners trying to get their pronunciation just perfect, others may benefit more from someone who has already been through the very same process you are: a native English speaker who knows the most common mistakes that English speakers make when learning Spanish and why we do that, and who can offer a range of helpful tricks to teach or retrain our brains in a way that makes sense to us.
