About Amber

If you choose me as your tutor, you are choosing a tutor who will listen and research strategies to help meet your individual needs and interests in an online class setting. I adjust my classes depending on what the student is trying to get out of it. Yes, I'm the teacher, but you have a huge say over the class, and I love to hear about what my students prefer and do not prefer as far as activities go!

My passion for the Spanish language helps me teach it. I began learning Spanish when I was 13, took four years of high school Spanish, then majored in it in college. After obtaining my bachelor's degree in Spanish Language Arts, I lived in Spain for a year, and then in the Dominican Republic for seven months, where I became completely fluent. I would love to share my expertise in Spanish with beginner- and intermediate-level interested students.

I also am a native English speaker with over two years of experience speaking English as a Second Language. I obtained a TEFL/TESOL certificate in 2017, and have tutored/taught English both in classrooms and online. My intimate familiarity with the English language and passion for teaching combine to make me a great fit for all levels of ESL/ESOL students.

I have been studying Spanish for over a decade and am fluent in it. I lived in Spain, and then the Dominican Republic, where I worked for 40+ hours per week completely in Spanish, alphabetizing young students in their native Spanish language. I can also read and write in Spanish at an advanced level and in a professional manner. I really love Spanish, and that passion definitely shows up in my classroom. :)

As far as English goes, I have been tutoring/teaching ESL/ESOL since October of 2017. I worked in Spain as an English Language Assistant, and have worked in classrooms, in an online setting, and in one-on-one private, in-person tutoring sessions over the past two years. I have taught children as young as two and upto adult. I love teaching, and I am happy to combine that with my expertise on the English language.

About the lesson

I always begin with a 20/30-minute chat, free of charge. This is so that the student and I can get to know each other a bit, our backgrounds, and what the students' needs and interests are when it comes to learning another language. I typically will assess their current English or Spanish-level during that first conversation. Then, we schedule a class, and begin the work (and the fun)! I always encourage students to study and expose themselves to the language outside of our classroom (through TV, movies, music, reading articles, etc.), but I don't assign homework unless the student wants it.

I have worked with children as young as two years old and as old as adult students. My students have varied in their native language, race, economic background, religion, interests and needs. I will never discriminate against a student on any basis. I teach in a secular and unbiased manner, and am happy to include dialogue on a variety of topics in the coursework, depending on the student and what they are comfortable with.

Details

I charge a very affordable rate of $20 per hour per student, because I take into account the classtime as well as the time I spend outside of class preparing, planning, and researching a variety of strategies/activities. If there are two students, I charge $30 per hour to teach them both at the same time. Group pricing is negotiable.
