About Alison

I love working with students of all ages. I strive to be curious and dedicated alongside my students to help them develop a lifelong love of learning -- whether we're focusing on violin, music theory, English, Spanish, or math! I've been privileged to study at some amazing institutions and with some amazing mentors, and I want to pass the fruits of these opportunities forward. More information about my experience can be found here: (concealed information)

The daughter of a violin teacher, I have served as my mother's teaching assistant and substitute teacher for as long as I can remember. I started my own teaching studio while still in middle school, giving piano lessons to neighborhood kids! In high school, I started tutoring fellow students in algebra and geometry through my school's peer tutoring program. I taught English in Costa Rica over my gap year, and upon my return I started tutoring middle and high school students in various academic subjects.

ACADEMICS

I am a graduate of Barnard College, Columbia University, where I studied Political Science and Human Rights. I am also an IB Diploma Programme graduate. I've been tutoring students in reading, writing, math, and test preparation for several years. I'm fluent in Spanish and have a particular passion for second language learning (I'm also working on my Chinese and French)! A summary of my experience can be found here: (concealed information)

MUSIC

I have been playing the violin since I was three years old. In high school, I held principal positions in youth orchestras and at summer festivals, toured internationally, and competed in state and local music competitions. Through college, I studied violin with Isaac Malkin at the Manhattan School of Music. I have performed widely as a chamber musican and orchestra member, including at Carnegie Hall, at Symphony Space, and at weddings and other events.

About the lesson

I love working with students of all ages, from elementary school students to older adults!

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Think about what you are hoping to get out of your lessons. Are these lessons going to supplement existing classes or stand alone?

If you are looking for academic tutoring, are you (or your child) preparing for a specific test? Developing general analytical skills in preparation for challenging high school or college classes? Hoping to practice conversing in another language?

If you are looking for music lessons, are you (or your child) hoping to pursue music as a career? To be able to play in an orchestra? To develop a lifelong love or understanding of music? How much time are you planning to dedicate to your craft?
