About Fanny

I teach all levels of Spanish, especially AP Spanish Language & Culture and literature. My main goal is to provide all of the tools, (grammar, reading, comprehension, listening, speaking and fluency) so that my students can comunnicate effectively and confidently in the spanish-speaking world. I have 16 years of experience in teaching Spanish at a Boarding Independent school, a Master's degree from Middlebury College, and certificates from many education courses that have helped me to enhance my work.

I really enjoy teaching the Spanish language because it allows me to share not only my language, but also the Peruvian culture and all of it's contributions to the Hispanic world. I've had the fascinating opportunity to meet people from around the globe, which leads me to mention my experience with ACTFL. The ACTFL (Anual Conference Teaching Foreign Language) invites me every year to deliver a conference to my colleagues. This is always a great opportunity for me to meet more people.

I used to be a journalist in Peru. I moved to the U.S. in 2003 and started to learn ESL in many colleges, include Yale University. I fell in love learning the language and culture as I fully immersed myself, so I thought about doing something that would allow others to have this same experience. Moreover, I decided to teach Spanish, which is my maternal language.

I have a Master's Degree at Middlebury School - Spanish School

Harvard University (Graduate School of Education) teaching courses.

Attendee and Lecturer of ACTFL (Annual Conference of Teaching Foreing Language)

About the lesson

First I meet wiith them 1-1 and talk ask them about their interests and also their expectations and what they want to get out of the course. Then, we create a goal together tailored to them. After this first step, I would prepare a plan which includes a full inmersion preparation covering all language skills according to his/her level. For each level, I would use a specific text, e-text, and workbook to support each lesson plan.

I've worked mainly with 8th grade and high school students.

I would advise any student to find a teacher who speaks fluently the language, teaches as a full immersion experience, and knows the Hispanic Culture. Aside from these factors, it is also very important the teacher is able to adjust to the students needs and learning style (visual, audio, kinesthetic).

This past weekend I took my family on a vacation to the White Mountains. On one of the last days of the trip, I went snowshoeing with my husband. Once we met up with the group guide, we embarked on our long journey. It was not easiest in the least, but it was an opportunity to push myself. Once we reached the top of Willard Mountain, we experienced the most spectacular view. Personally, the most important part of the memories I make are the meaning and lessons that I take away from my experiences. The long and steady hike to the top of the mountain merely reminded me that hard work always has an upside, and to always look at the bigger picture.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Why do I have to learn Spanish?

What are my goals?

Am I willing to study or work abroad?

What level should I be in?

How many hours daily will I dedicate to learning Spanish?

Sra. Viacava is an excellent Spanish teacher! I remember when I was a student of hers, I really enjoyed and appreciated how interactive she was in the classroom. For example, she would have my classmates and I take turns conversing about any given subject. Not only did this make preparing for the AP a fun endeavor, but it also made me a better Spanish speaker. Even if I didn't know too much about a particular topic, I learned how to think on my feet and spin a question to suit my interests and knowledge. Thanks to Sra. Viacava, I scored a 5 on my AP Exam, which helped fulfill my language requirements at Princeton University!

Sra. Vera is everything you could ever want in a Spanish instructor.

Firstly, she is deeply experienced in education. She has taught multiple skill ranges at amazing institutions and has continuously invested in her own instructional development.

She is also one of the most caring teachers you will ever have. She brings an energy and excitement to teaching that is fueled by a deep love of Spanish language and Spanish-speaking cultures. Learning about her native country, Peru, is one of the amazing benefits about being a student of Sra Vera's. Her love of Peru is infectious and it becomes highly energizing and motivating for her students. She loves to challenge her students but does so in a way that is exciting, fun, and engaging.

Sra Vera wants you to succeed and continuously helps you find the inspiration to keep learning. Don't walk, RUN, at the chance to learn with her!! :)

Señora Vera is best in the business. She creates an environment that allows students to increase their Spanish speaking and comprehension skills with hands on activities. Her approach has allowed me to advance my skills to a far greater level than I thought I could achieve. Working with Señora Vera has also made it possible for me to create a great student-teacher relationship and that speaks to her character and the classroom she has been able to cultivate.
