About James
I believe my service stands out in a variety of ways. First off, I consider myself to be a global citizen. I have 15 years experience teaching College level Spanish in both the United States and abroad in Barcelona, Spain. I also have earned a Ph.D in Spanish Literature and Culture from the University of Chicago plus two Masters degrees in Romance Languages, one from the University of Chicago and the other from the Spanish National Research Council in Madrid Spain.
Secondly, I am passionate about incorporating different kinds of educational technology in my teaching (often incorporating virtual technology technology in my classes, to make the Spanish speaking world come alive in my classes). My teaching also incorporates a task based learning approach, giving students practical situations for them to resolve using Spanish.
In addition to my classroom teaching experience, I have also coordinated a tutoring program while in college called Portland Impact where I worked with elementary and high school students.
I enjoy three principal aspects of my job as a Spanish teacher. The first is designing assignments that engage my students to the fullest and that allow them to work together. I also enjoy learning about my student's backgrounds and motivations for speaking Spanish, whether that be for professional purposes, to gain college entry or to travel abroad. Furthermore, I enjoy guiding my students through what I call their productive struggles as they master Spanish.
