About Lisa

I think there are a lot of good teachers out there. In my humble opinion, I feel that one thing that sets me apart is my sensitivity and adaptability with my students. In my experience, many teachers have a set lesson plan, delivering "carbon copy" lessons all day long. I put in the extra effort to really listen and tailor the work to fit the needs of each individual developing artist.

I truly enjoy the interaction with students of all ages and types, and at all levels in their artistic development. I find it extremely rewarding when a student "gets" what I'm teaching them and has a breakthrough. Art is a gift that should be shared with as many people as possible!

As a child, my dad took me to see my uncle Ted Ross perform on Broadway. He was the Lion in the Wiz, both on Broadway and later in the film with Michael Jackson & Diana Ross. From then on, I knew that's what I wanted to do! My high school chorus teacher discovered I had the potential to sing opera and encouraged me to pursue it. As I did so, studying first at a junior college and then at Boston Conservatory, I found that I also had a natural nurturing side, and enjoyed helping other singing actors to prepare for their auditions and hone their skills. I even met my husband one summer when he came to audition for an opera that I was producing/directing to provide performance opportunities for myself and other singers!

I hold a Bachelor of Arts degree in Vocal Performance from The Boston Conservatory of Music, where in addition to performance, I was trained in acting, dance, conducting, piano and vocal pedagogy. I also have years of performance experience, both in the U.S. and throughout Europe; primarily in opera and classical music, but also in musical theatre and operetta. I have done some directing and choreographing as well.

About the lesson

I always begin by asking the student what they hope to accomplish with their art, then we'll talk a little bit about their past experience. From there, we will dive right in with a few stretches incorporating Alexander technique to open up the body, some breathing exercises and vocal warmups, and we'll end each lesson by working on a piece of music! I tailor each lesson to the needs and talents of the individual student, and work every aspect of performance; not just the vocal, but also the interpretation and presentation, so that they can create fully developed characters and ace their auditions!

My students have ranged in age and experience from 9 year old beginners (one of my 9 year olds ended up in the Washington National Opera Children's Chorus) to working professionals, to 50+ aged professional and amateurs. I've taught classical singing, musical theatre, and popular singing. It all boils down to a healthy technique that translates to just about any style of music.

Decide what your goals are: are you looking to have a career performing? Are you currently a working performer looking for a fresh perspective? Are you just looking to have fun singing for your own enjoyment? All of these are valid aims. Let the professional know your goals so that they can tailor the lessons to fit you. For example, while I am always a positive and supportive teacher, I am much more of a taskmaster with someone looking to hone their skills in the hopes of pursuing a career. Don't be afraid to ask questions!

I am thrilled to see my students grow and reach their goals. Many of my students are successful performers; one recently sang the title role of Oliver at his middle school, another was the male lead in Mary Poppins at his high school, and another sang a supporting role in H.M.S. Pinafore with a professional opera company. A number of them have received Superior marks for their performances at the International Thespian Festival. Just today, one of my 12 year old sopranos had a vocal breakthrough and sang a beautiful, fully supported A above the staff! It is both the large and small victories that make teaching so worthwhile.

Details

My regular fee is $55 for a 60-minute lesson or $35 for a 30-minute lesson. I have a number of students that travel to study with me; for those that travel more than 25 miles, my fee is $45 for 60 minutes or $30 for 30 mnutes.
