About Samuel
I first asked to take piano lessons when I was 7 years old, and after a few years playing it became a vital part of who I was. I fell in love with the music of Bartók and Schumann, obsessively learned Beatles songs, and began to write and improvise when I was around 10. I picked up guitar and bass a few years later, but piano has always provided the backbone of my musical understanding. As a college student, I majored in Piano Performance and Jazz Studies at Hope College, which only expanded the depth of my love of the instrument. In Portland, I've had the pleasure of working with fantastic musicians of all different styles, and developing my own voice with my band Sama Dams.
As a teacher, I feel called to find the spark of passion in each one of my students, young and old. Along with providing a healthy background in technique, I believe in finding the unique path that lays before each student. There are so many different ways that piano can speak to you - I've made it my mission to help you listen and understand that voice.
I'd love to work with you to help you chart out your own musical journey.
