About Paula

My passion for teaching started at the age of 15. I was classically trained, and I graduated with honors from the Music Teachers Association after completing level 10 Certificate of Merit.

I have been performing for over 40 years as I am a full time musician, performer, teacher, and recording artist. I specialize in technique, performance, theory, stage presence, ear training, and sight reading.

i hold two public recitals per year, and during the summer I offer a 3-hour group workshop where the students are given an opportunity to perform for each other with constructive feedback from their peers, take a written test, work on theory, and play musical games.

I get true joy watching my students grow and progress. I also teach adults who have "learning piano" as part of their bucket list. It is truly rewarding to be a part of somebody's accomplishments. I am very proud of the work that I do, and moreso of the work that my students do.

My mother was a piano teacher, and I learned a lot about teaching by observing her. I started teaching at the age of 15 with my own piano instructor, who trained me by having me teach her own students the theory portion of their lessons. Through this system, I was able to pay for my own lessons and gain experience under the guidance of a professional instructor.

I graduated with honors in 1983 from the Music Teacher's Association's Certificate of Merit program. Since graduating, I've performed for private and public events all over Southern California. I was musical director for a community theater program for over 10 years, and performed for over 20 musical productions. I was musical director for several church choirs, and musical ensembles.

About the lesson

I tailor my lessons to each individual student. I find the age-appropriate books and materials (i.e. flash cards, worksheets) and I pace my lessons to the student's ability.

Ages 6 through adults.

Ask if the teacher includes reading, theory, technique, performance, and stage presence in their lesson plans. Many teachers simply teach a student how to play specific songs. I believe teaching the student about music fundamentals is just as important as learning the instrument.

I enjoy watching my students perform at my piano recitals. I get such joy watching their successes. And what's more, many students become friends because they see each other at recitals and summer workshops.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students don't always have an end-goal in mind as many are taking lessons because their parents want them to. However, it is very important that the student learn to read music, understand basic theory fundamentals, and have exercises assigned to help build finger dexterity. Many students just "want to play". I explain that I give the tools to allow them to do just that.

After 3 lessons, our 6 year old grandson is able to play simple songs and read basic music. However, more importantly, Miss Paula makes it fun and motivates our grandson to practice without resistance.

Details

I charge a flat rate of $90 per month. I do not schedule make-up lessons as my schedule is full. However, students usually can make up missed lessons when there are 5 weeks in a month, as they are not charged for the extra class. Thus, the reason for my flat rate. In addition, during the summer, I offer a 3-hour group workshop (at no charge) to help offset missed lessons.

I have two public recitals per year at no charge.
