About Sheryl
My interest in how we learn when we learn music as well as my extensive experience as a performing musician lends depth and insight to my teaching.
I believe in buildling a strong foundation in beginners, teaching music reading in a way that is pedagogically and cognitively sound, and helping students develop understanding and problem solving strategies at all levels in age- and level-appropriate ways.
I've taught privately, at the university level, and at elite summer music camps for years. I've also taught in Brazil as a Fulbright Scholar, and performed throughout the U.K. and the U.S., as well as in Italy and Brazil.
My current non-studio work includes working on several song recital series' and pedagogy course facilitating for the Royal Conservatory of Music of Toronto.
I have been published in peer-reviewed journals and textbooks in piano pedagogy and music education, and have a monograph out as of July of 2022 published by Rowman and Littlefield entitled "Thinking and Playing Music: Intentional Strategies for Optimal Practice and Performance.

I just knew it was what I wanted to do, and all of my studies have led me to it and supported my goals.
I have a doctorate in piano performance with extensive study in music education and piano pedagogy. I have been teaching students of all ages and levels for 30 years. This extensive experience and my interest in music cognition and developing effective practice and problem solving strategies equips me well to work with students of all ages and levels.

We usually start with a getting-to-know-each-other phase, where I determine what the student knows and what their strengths and struggles are. We then work on filling in any gaps using existing pieces and knowledge while they get to know my teaching and I can observe how they work and how quickly they can adapt to new strategies or ideas.
For beginners, we start with building a musical foundation through singing, chanting, and rote songs before learning to read music so that the vocabulary lends predictability and context to their first reading experiences, just like we all did long ago when learning to read text.
All types -- from very young beginners to retirees, including students heading for college as piano majors, college piano majors and minors, and the most gifted and accomplished young people at Interlochen Arts Camp in the summers.
The student should get to know the teacher and vice versa, with a focus on whether the teacher can and will teach to their own individual needs, goals, and interests. While various learning styles are relevant in many areas, the focus of the domain itself should dictate to some extent what kind of work is done. Finding someone who can teach what needs to be taught but tailor it in a way that suits your own strengths and interests is crucial.
The publication of my book marked the culmination of many years of teaching, practicing, and research. This and my semester as a Fulbright scholar have been pinnacles of my career.

Dr. Sheri Iott is a phenomenal teacher who is always kind and patient while pushing you to work hard and become a more experienced and well-rounded musician.
