About Joan

I enjoy working and teaching students aged from 4 to 96! Music is very rewarding to me and I perform in many different aspects of it - Piano, keyboard, organ, percussion, bells and choir. My favorite aspect is in teaching smiling faces and people who want to learn.

I really enjoy watching people grow in learning music and especially helping students enjoy music and see how it can enrich their lives.

I am currently accepting students for the summer and fall 2025.

I began piano lessons at age 8 and have always enjoyed music in all its various forms. As I grew, I knew that my greatest joy would be in helping others to learn the wonderful effects that music can have on individuals and also how it can be therapeutic to the soul.

Attended Florida State University and completed Bachelor of Music at University of Alabama in Huntsville with a major in piano and a split minor in organ and voice. Started lessons at age eight and have been teaching for over 40 years. I am a member of Music Teacher's National Association, Alabama Music Teacher's Association and Huntsville Music Teacher's Association and enter interested and qualified students in auditions and competitions. I have taught ages 3 through 72 and have been active in several types of music - Directing orchestras for musicals, directing choirs, playing bells and percussion in Concert Bands, and playing keyboard in a Big Swing Band.

About the lesson

When meeting a new student, I ascertain what they already know about music and playing the piano, and what they want to get from taking piano lessons. Then I provide music books and tools to help them meet their goals. They will reimburse me for applicable items.

I have taught pre-schoolers, elementary ages, teenagers, adults and even a retired Army Colonel, and am now working with 80+ year-olds! I only want to work with people that want to learn. A smiling face is always appreciated!

Try to match personalities that would be appropriate for the student. Also, find out their qualifications - especially if the student wants to major in music.

Last year my students had a Halloween Recital and dressed in their favorite costumes. We usually have a Christmas/Winter Recital and always have a Spring recital.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
They need to have an instrument to practice on, and enough time required to learn the lessons given each week. Everyone learns at different paces, but the student needs to have an atmosphere that would be conducive to practice without distractions.

Perfect! We have had our first lesson with Joan and she is encouraging, more instructive than our previous piano teacher, and is clearly very knowledgeable about many forms of piano music. We would certainly recommend her to anyone of any level of instruction, she meets you where you are and goes from there. Very talented and very sweet!

I love how thorough and patient she is — and so encouraging to my teenage son. Her rates are super reasonable, too. We just adore her and highly recommend her. Judging by her library of songbooks and amazing experience and credentials, she would be a great fit for any level of student. She has a very sweet dog, too!

We have been very pleased with the kindness Ms. Joan has shown towards our son. He has been her student for the past year and a half and has excelled far beyond where he would have been with a previous instructor. We would highly recommend her for lessons!
