About Kinga

Hello! My name is Kinga Smutek, and I just finished my second year at Illinois State University studying Music Therapy with a minor in Spanish. I have been playing piano since I was 5, and have been teaching it privately since 2014. I have been in various piano competitions and even have played internationally in a variety of settings. I love building connections with my students through the music we play, and show them how special and useful playing piano really can be. One of my biggest teaching philosophies is to not just teach my students how to play songs, but to show them how to do it and why it all works the way it does, in order to make it easier for them to actually understand and not just memorize what they learn. I have taken piano lessons since I was 5 with a few teachers, so I have been through different teaching methods myself. I also have a lot of performance experience in a variety of settings, whether it be a concert hall, a church, or a rock stage, and I share what I learned through these experiences with my students.

About the lesson

During our first lesson, I take the time to get to know my student. Not only if they have any experience, but also what interests them. It's a lot easier to work together if we get to know each other more, and relate with each other outside of just playing piano. If they like certain movies, for example, I might later give them some music from that movie so that they have a more memorable experience.
