I make sure they understand the basics of music thoroughly. Reading notes, rhythm, and common musical symbols is so important.
We go as slowly as they need, I am very patient. I also try not to slow down the students who seem to progress on the piano quicker.
Most of my students are children, but I have had success with adults as well.
It is very important that teacher and student are compatible. I try my hardest to relate to my students: sometimes that requires me being quiet, or funny, or talking about a video game/movie.
