About Sarah
My teaching is " holistic" in that I take into account all aspects of a person when teaching, choosing songs, and deciding how much to push a student and when.
There is no " cookie cutter mold" for teaching music. I try to take into account the many factors that make a student unique and encourage them to understand how those things can enhance their abilities in music.
I have taught piano, started and directed a choir with students ages 5-18 for ten years, started and directed a teen music ministry for ten years, and co founded and directed a traveling teen retreat team with my late husband. This was a 45 member team that included an eight member music team. We did this for several years.
I began playing piano at age four and eventually taught piano to students from age 5- adult. I've also taught pre school music and directed summer music camps.
Empowering people with the knowledge of music is both exciting and rewarding to me.
I love seeing the light come on in a person when he/she masters a familiar song and or grasps a musical concept.
I began teaching on my own when I was 21 years old.
At age 24, I began working at a music studio and did so for seven years.
I played/took lessons from the time I was five. I attended guild and festival every year and as a high school senior received my high school music " degree".( this was not easy.)
I studied piano under Dr. Rupert at Centenary college in Shreveport La. I took college theory, voice, and music education classes there.
I taught under Louise Schneider of Marksville La for seven years. She had a degree in music education with piano as her major instrument.
I directed a youth choir for ten years, directed a music ministry team for the next ten years, and basically incorporated music and teaching into everything I did after that.

My process begins with getting to know about the student, specifically; what are the reasons for deciding to take piano lessons.
As we know in cases of children and teens, it's often the parents who decide the child will learn piano. In this case, my job is two-fold: teaching the basics while also ensuring that the student is quickly introduced to a piece he/she is familiar with( in the simplest form)
With regards to students who decided for themselves to learn piano, we discuss favorite types of music, that " piece" he/she has always wanted to learn, and then we discuss the effort required of that student to achieve that goal.
I have worked with pre school students through adults.
I would suggest that a potential student look for a teacher who has experience. Also, look for a well rounded teacher; one who can teach classical music as well as popular music . A piano teacher who can sing is also a plus. Often times, students want to play popular music want to accompany themselves while singing those songs .
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Why are you taking piano?
What type of music do you want to learn and why?
Do you or have to ever played piano or any other instrument?
Are you willing to practice?
If you do not have a piano or keyboard will you have access to one?
