About Carl

Arctic Light is owned an operated by Carl Johnson, one of Alaska's most award-winning nature photographers. He has been photographing nature for over 20 years, and has a deep passion for exploring the light and landscape in wild places. Carl has served as the artist-in-residence for Badlands, Gates of the Arctic, and Rocky Mountain National Parks; was named the winner of the "Envirionmental Issues" category in the Windland Smith Rice International Awards; received the Daniel Housberg Wilderness Image Award for Excellence in Still Photography, Film or Video by the Alaska Conservation Foundation; has been awarded an Individual Artist Fellowship by the Rasmuson Foundation; and was awarded two honorable metions in the Wilderness Forever Competition sponsored by Nature's Best Photography managazine and the Smithsonian Institute.

Carl's photography has appeared in Outdoor Photographer, Backpacker, National Parks, Nature's Best Photography, National Geographic and other magazines. His first book, "Where Water is Gold: Life and Livelihood in Alaska's Bristol Bay" was awarded a gold medal in the Independent Publisher Book Awards and a silver medal in the Nautilus Book Awards.

Carl is also a very personable, attentive and experienced instructor. Many clients who even considered themselves experienced photographers still learned from Carl's hands-on field instruction in various photographic techniques. He has worked as a lecturer and instructor for Tony Robbins, Princess Cruise Lines and several remote wilderness lodges in Alaska.

I started informally at first, with people seeing my work and asking me to provide them instruction or tours. I was later hired by businesses such as the Anthony Robbins Companies to provide personalized instructions to their clients while engaged in international travel. I ultimately incorporated it into my standard business model.

I received my initial training while serving in the Navy at the Intelligence Photography School at Yokosuka, Japan. I took several courses during my undergraduate studies at the University of Minnesota. I have been a student at several photography workshops and observed various techniques employed by different instructors. I have taught classes at the university level.

About the lesson

I first want to gain an understanding of the current skill level of the clilent in order to gain a baseline of where they are. Then, I inquire specifically as to their immediate goals of where they want to go next, what they want to do.

I have worked with new hobbyists with point-and-shoot cameras and full-time professionals who engage in other types of photography and wanted to explore nature photography.

There are a lot of people out there who will consider themselves a professional photographer once they have an expensive camera. But that is not what truly makes a professional. Look for someone with a proven track record of publication, recognition through awards or artist residencies, and someone who can communicate well. Blogs are a good way to examine whether someone communicates well, to see if they provide useful tips in photographic instruction.

I was out with an client for an Aurora Photo Tour, and from the moment we arrived at our first location, the aurora borealis was on display. The client was very excited and thrilled to be seeing the aurora for the first time. As the night progressed and the aurora built in strength, she became even more excited, especially when she started to capture her own images of the aurora. That she was able to see the aurora so well and be happy with her ability to capture it well was extremely rewarding for me, and very satisfying.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Quite simply, what do you want to do? Think more specifically than just, "I want to take good pictures." Think about certain types of photos you want to take, or techniques you want to understand. Also, consider if you fully understand how light interacts with cameras - that is the key to understanding the creation of an image. Understanding and seeing light is something not often taught in courses and workshops.

Details

If providing instruction on an hourly basis only, my rate is $50 per hour, regardless of field instruction or classroom instruction. I also provide custom photo instruction in larger blocks of time (Custom Photo Tour), at a rate of $500 for eight hours of time in the field, or $750 for full day, sunrise to sunset and beyond.
