About Kittie

I believe in the value of study. As a mostly self-taught artist, I have a pretty in-depth library of reference books, Carlson’s Guide to Landscapes and Edgar Payne’s classic book on composition being 2 of my most treasured.

I paint with a colorful and well thought out palette and approach. My students are challenged and I want my students to experiment and try new things. No one person knows everything, and frequently a breakthrough comes while being challenged.

I had a work space in public for a time and quite a few folks asked about classes. I started initially with a 2 hour social painting class, but soon realized that my enjoyment really comes from sharing what I’ve learned on my way in a private or semi-private envitonment.

I have studied over these past years with John Salminen, Ted Nuttall, and Judi Betts. I study with David Leffel and also Bill Inman, both living and very successful artists and teachers. I study art collectors’ magazines and watch workshop videos almost daily in order to continuously improve.

About the lesson

Even though it’s not necessary, I first like to see samples of work in order to put together a customized lesson plan. I then like for my student to tell me where they would like to go with their lessons.

I’ve worked with total beginners to advanced intermediate. I like everyone to have a positive experience and work hard to let my beginners play without spending the huge sums that are normally required.

The most important aspect of choosing a teacher is verifying that they have a solid knowledge of both the art AND the science behind great art. Creativity in making art is a good start, but ability to communicate and to determine a students’ needs is most important.

I submitted 2 portraits to the Durham Art Guild’s 63rd Annual Exhibit. One of my paintings was accepted, which made me very happy. Later I received an email saying that in actuality, BOTH paintings had been accepted. The icing on the cake was being able to attend the juror’s talk. Some much needed encouragement was sent my way.

Details

I like my beginner students to commit to a set 4 to 6 lessons. My fee is $35/hour. Typically, the first couple of lessons will be 1.5-2 hours. After that, I’ve found that there’s a rythym to the learning and we can be effective with one hour at a time.
