About John

Everything from oil and water color paintings, to my Photography and music. I am currently writing my book, “By Myself, But Never Alone” regarding my life in planting trees. This includes and all of the Japanese Maple Trees I’ve planted now over 10 years of working here on my largest art project, “Maples on the Pond; Nature Preserve” It is 40 acres near the Croton Pond, MI where I am creating a Japanese Maple Tree Sanctuary. I have already planted over 300 different varieties of Japanese Maples within the forest here in Michigan. I've created path ways and trails so in the future I wish to have private tours for schools and individuals. I have been planting trees since I was 7 years old beginning in my backyard in Brooklyn, NY.

“Skeleton Dance,” (2016) is my current movie project, directed by Benito Garcia. I’ve written music for "Escape to the Black Tree Forest," (2011), including others, and I also have three songs in the movie, "Sleepaway Camp IV; The Survivor.” In previous sequels, I wrote songs for Sleepaway Camp II; Unhappy Campers,” (1988) “Outta Control,” and Sleepaway III; Teenage Wasteland,” (1989) in which my song "Sleepaway," is now considered the "anthem" for the entire series.

My CD, “A Little Fright Music; Songs for Monster Movies,” with all of my horror music will be release in 2020.

Maples on the Pond; Nature Preserve

Since 2000, I have been an avid collector and student of Japanese Maple trees and in 2009, I officially began my nature preserve in Croton, MI. “Maples on the Pond; Nature Preserve.” I have now planted 363 different varieties of Japanese Maple trees and live within the Preserve. It is 40 acres of secondary old growth mixed forest, and I share a boundary line with “Sailors Pines; Nature Preserve. I maintain this forest by myself which includes caring for the mixed forest and I have a community page on Facebook: “Maples on the Pond; Nature Preserve. I have studied Dendrology and Taxonomy with Professor Chuck Richards, who lectured at the University of Maine. I worked with Professor John Tristan soil types at the UMASS/Amherst and I also lectured at the Durfee Conservatory. I studied and worked with Forest Manager, Robbo Hollaran in Vermont.

All-Toons Animation, Inc .

I serve as an Animation consultant to Great American Ink and American Royal Arts, NY, including other animation galleries around the world. I developed limited editions (including concept character design, layout and backgrounds) for Universal Studios using the characters; Rocky and Bullwinkle, Boris and Natasha, and Woody Woodpecker. I created limited editions (including concept character design, layout, and background) for Kellogg Corporation using their characters, as well as limited editions for All-American Collectibles using the character of Jeannie from the television show, “I Dream of Jeannie.” I created limited editions for the Graceland Corporation, using the image of Elvis Presley and for American Royal Arts, creating 50 limited editions of characters from all studios which was later signed by “The Living Legends of Animation From The 20th Century,” including myself. I'm an Animation art historian, responsible for identifying all vintage animation artwork. Which includes; the correct studio, director, artists who worked on any specific animated short or feature film. Then relating this information to entire staff of sales consultants. I’ve also done live radio interviews around the United States about animation art, including lectures at museums and Universities.

Old Wood Bonsai, inc.

My bonsai were sold through nurseries, florists and Specialty Markets. My bonsai trees have appeared on Television shows such as, "Ellen," "Joey," and "What I Like About You." They were used for set design. I’ve lectured at museums, Universities and Horticultural societies about bonsai.

Created a children’s CD “Songs in the Key of Kids.” I was responsible for writing and producing all music, designing and illustrating all characters.

Ross Editions inc.

Art Director/Co-Founder/Vice President of Ross Editions, Inc.

I developed and created with Virgil Ross legendary Warner Bros. animator, our successful limited editions using Warner Bros. characters. Our work was sold at the Warner Bros. Studio Stores, and animation art galleries around the world. I supervised Virgil’s character designs and kept them to the highest standards on all projects. I developed his concepts, layouts and drew or painted most of the backgrounds for his editions. In 1993 Warner Bros. commissioned Vigil and I to create a piece of animation art for newly elected President Bill Clinton. This artwork is now part of President Clinton’s Presidential Library in Arkansas. I

collaborated frequently with top executive producers and attorneys at Warner Bros. at the time.

Spearheaded a new department to compete with Sotheby’s and Christie’s East. I solicited, collected, identified and appraised all animation artwork. I described and designed animation catalogs.

Warner Bros. Museum

Consultant.

Advised and worked directly with Leith Adams Corporate Archivist, and Lori Bond Executive Producer for TV animation, on collecting and selecting vintage animation along with designing the exhibit. It was the first ever animation exhibit held at the Warner Bros. Museum.

In Toon! Magazine

Co-founder and Editor-in-Chief

In Toon! was a magazine established for people collecting and interested in the history of animation art and was published quarterly. I conducted interviews with prominent Animators and Artists, supervised a full staff of writers, created editorial calendar, selected artwork, formulated articles and verified information. This required regular contact with studios, galleries and auction houses. Many of my articles and essay's were published in other animation magazines including books. I appeared on Television and did radio interviews explaining the process of animation and its history.

Mrozinski

Lead Guitarist.

During this time performing and recording with composer Mrozinski, I performed on his record “Give it Up Kid,” that went #1 on the charts in Italy.

Concurrent Activities

As a freelance background artist, I have completed over 3,000 Animation cel backgrounds since 1989 using varied mediums.

Trustee, Ross/Schneider Grantor Trust. Directly involved in coordinating vintage animation art donated to Warner Bros. Museum.

Founder of the John Altyn Bonsai Collection at the Durfee Conservatory, University of Massachusetts/Amherst.

Studied dendrology, taxonomy and forest management with forester Robbo Holleran, studied dendrology and taxonomy with Prof. Chuck Richards, studied greenhouse maintenance and horticulture with Prof. John Tristen UMASS/Amherst.

Wrote songs and recorded music in Nashville with the "Billy Goats" working under legendary music producer Brian Ahern.

Was co-founder and lead guitarist of the Blues band “Blind Blackie.” Our music was played via radio and internet from Texas to Nashville to London.

1990-1991 Private tutorial with Warner Bros. background artist Paul Julian - Studied color theory, layout and background techniques.

1990-1992 Private tutorial with Disney and Warner Bros. storyboard artist Maurice Noble - Studied color theory, storyboard design.

1991 Animation Union, North Hollywood. Studied under Disney animator Bud Hester, animation mechanics. This also included studies of layout and background techniques with several other professional animation artists.

1988-1990 Private tutorials with Director/producer/animator Shamus Culhane. Studied character design, storyboard design and layout design.

Pratt Institute - Brooklyn, New York.

1975-1979 Majored in Animation and minored in fine art drawing and painting.
