About Caleb

I have been painting professionally for four years but have been creating art at one level or another my entire life. In the four years that I have dedicated to full time painting, I’ve done shows in Columbus and Canton, Ohio as well as in Lexington, Kentucky and in Manhattan. I have paintings in collections across the U.S. as well as in Europe.

If you like my paintings and want to take a piece of what I do and add it the individualistic qualities of who you are as an artist I would love to show you the things that I do to bring a canvas to life.

I love to create intriguing environments on the canvas with bold colors and the sense of movement and depth. I make paintings that demand attention in their space.

Painting to me is life itself. I’m either doing it or thinking about it - all day, every day.

Over the years people have asked me to teach them to paint. I like a good adventure so I said yes. I’ve taken on others through word of mouth. Using lesson.com is the first time I’ve actively seeked out students.

I studied at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh in 1996-97 and worked as a studio assistant and studied under New York City contemporary artist, Alexis Portilla, in the summer and fall of 2017.

About the lesson

Depending on a students experience level the answer varies. For a beginner it’s getting a student to understand how to not be afraid of being less than perfect. How to help the individual think creatively and to make decisions without hesitation or self criticism. Also, how to choose the right paints, canvases, etc to achieve what they are trying accomplish successfully.

I’ve worked mostly with beginners but did have one student that I felt was as good or better painter then me and I taught her more so about my own personal process then how to paint. I feel like at this point in my career that I’m better for the new or newer painters and perhaps those with painters block or those looking to see how others operate.

Look for a teacher that wants to help you develop into the artist you are. Not someone that is trying to make you into them.
