  • 1) When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I developed an interest in my chosen field, which is mathematics, at a young age. I was always drawn to the logical and problem-solving aspects of the subject. However, my passion for private tutoring specifically emerged during my University years when I started helping my peers with their math coursework. I realized how much I enjoyed explaining complex concepts in a way that made sense to others and witnessing their "aha" moments.
Growing up in a religious and culturally rich environment, I was exposed to the Qur'an's teachings and its profound impact on people's lives. This ignited my passion for understanding and sharing the wisdom and guidance found in the Qur'an. As for private tutoring, my interest developed when I began helping the younger students at my Qur'an class with their Quranic studies, witnessing the transformative power of personalized instruction.
  • 2) Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I teach mathematics, and I find all areas of math fascinating. I particularly enjoy discussing topics like algebra, trigonometry, and geometry with my students because they form the foundation for many other mathematical concepts. While there are no topics I dislike teaching, some students may struggle with certain areas, and it's my job as a tutor to find creative and engaging ways to help them overcome their challenges.
I also teach Qur'anic studies, focusing on the interpretation (Tafsir) and recitation (Tajweed) of the Quran. I particularly enjoy discussing the Qur'an's themes of compassion, forgiveness, and social justice with my students. These topics provide opportunities for meaningful discussions and help students connect with the Qur'an's timeless teachings. While there are no topics I like less, some students may struggle with the linguistic intricacies of Arabic, which require patience and persistence to master.
  • 3) Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

Yes, I had a high school math teacher who inspired me greatly. She had a unique ability to simplify complex mathematical ideas and make them accessible to all students. Her enthusiasm for the subject was contagious, and she fostered a supportive and inclusive learning environment. She showed me the impact a passionate and dedicated teacher can have on students, which motivated me to pursue a career in education.
Yes, I had a Qur'an teacher during my formative years who deeply inspired me. Her profound understanding of the Qur'an and her ability to convey its messages in a simple yet impactful manner left a lasting impression on me. She was not only a knowledgeable scholar but also a compassionate mentor, emphasizing the importance of living the Qur'an's values in one's daily life. Her teachings continue to guide my approach to Qur'anic instruction. My mother played a vital role as well in the ignition of the love for Qur'an at a very tender age.
  • 4) What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

To be a good tutor, one must possess patience, adaptability, excellent communication skills, and a deep understanding of the subject matter. Patience is crucial because students learn at different paces, and a good tutor must be willing to explain concepts repeatedly. Adaptability is important because each student has unique learning needs, and it's essential to tailor your teaching approach accordingly. Effective communication is key to conveying ideas clearly, and a strong grasp of the subject matter is fundamental for offering meaningful guidance and assistance.
As for being a good Qur'an tutor, one must possess a deep understanding of the Qur'an's text and context, patience, empathy, and the ability to create a safe and nurturing learning environment.
  • 5) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

One memorable experience from my school days is when I struggled with a particularly challenging math problem for days. I couldn't solve it despite trying various approaches. Finally, with the help of my teacher and some classmates, we tackled the problem as a team, combining our different perspectives and problem-solving strategies. This taught me the power of collaboration and the importance of seeking help when needed, both of which I now emphasize in my tutoring sessions.
During my early years as a teacher of Qur'an in my neighbourhood in Kenya, I had a certain student who found it difficult understanding the rules of reciting (Tajweed) the Qur'an. Through consistent practice, patience, and personalized guidance, this student eventually not only mastered Tajweed but also developed a deep connection with the Qur'an. It reinforced the idea that with the right mentorship, anyone can access the beauty and wisdom of the Quran. Today he is among the youngest students in the neighbourhood who can recite the entire Qur'an by heart and can lead prayers.
  • 6) What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or are still facing in your subject?

In mathematics, one of the challenges is making abstract concepts tangible and relatable to students who may initially find them intimidating. Additionally, keeping students engaged in the subject can be a hurdle, as math can sometimes be seen as dry or difficult. I continuously strive to find creative teaching methods and real-world examples to address these challenges and make math more accessible and enjoyable for my students.
One challenge in teaching Qur'anic studies is maintaining students' motivation and engagement, especially in today's fast-paced world. Balancing modern life with the study of a timeless scripture can be demanding. Additionally, ensuring accurate pronunciation and interpretation of Arabic words and phrases requires diligence and perseverance. The challenge is to make the subject both accessible and relevant to students.
  • 7) Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

My passion primarily lies in teaching and helping students succeed in their academic journeys. I find great fulfillment in witnessing their growth and achievements. While I have a deep appreciation for mathematics, my ultimate passion is in fostering a love for learning and helping students build confidence in their abilities, which extends beyond any single subject.
I also like sharing the Qur'an's teachings and helping individuals grow spiritually and morally through their understanding of the Qur'an. While teaching is a significant part of this passion, my ultimate goal is to facilitate a deep and personal connection between students and the Qur'an, empowering them to lead more fulfilling and purposeful lives in accordance with its guidance.
  • 8) What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P) ?

What makes me a Superprof is my commitment to my students' success and my dedication to providing a supportive and tailored learning experience. I believe in the power of education to transform lives, and I'm always seeking innovative ways to enhance my teaching methods. I aim to be more than just a tutor; I strive to be a mentor, helping my students not only master the subject but also develop critical thinking skills and a love for learning that will benefit them in all aspects of their lives.
In Islam, teaching the Qur'an is a lifelong charity. If the student uses even a tenth of the teaching of the Qur'an to improve their spiritual being, the teacher gets the same amount of rewards as the doer. Therefore, my goal is to inspire a lifelong love for the Qur'an and its transformative power in the lives of my students.
