About Emilie

I believe that everyone can learn and understand Math. When I work with students who are struggling with Math, I identify the reasons why, and I work with them to build on their existing knowledge until they can solve the problems.

I have a great passion for teaching math. I have 12+ years of experience teaching Math to children from elementary school through college students.

I speak English, Spanish and Dutch, and a little known language called Papiamentu.

I have a Master's degree in Computer Information Systems.

I love to help students understand Math at all levels, elementary school, middle school, high school, and college.

I have been fortunate to have always had excellent Math teachers, who made math easy for me to understand, and made me an A student. Math has always been my favorite subject.

I can help you learn and understand any subject in Math; whether you need to improve your overall grade or need help understanding specific problems or concepts.

I started tutoring when I was in college. My first tutoring assignment was to help a lady who needed to pass the Math component of her Florida teaching license. I helped her understand the parts that she was struggling with and I was very happy that I was able to help her. I felt very proud of her when she said that she passed with ease, especially since she started out believing that she could never learn math.

I am a substitute teacher with Orange County Public Schools in Florida, for Elementary, Middle, and High Schools.

I have successfully taught students of all ages Phonics/Reading, Arithmatic and Math. I have taught children in pre-school, as well as children in Elementary, Middle, and High school.

I have also helped adults successfully prepare for various Math exams, such as the required Math exam for the Florida Teacher Certificate Examination.

I have good mastery of Computer Science, Arithmetic, Pre-Algebra, ALgebra 1 & 2, Linear Algebra, Pre-Calculus, Calculus, Geometry, Topology, Probability, Statistics, Trigonometry, Logics, Differential equations, Descrete Mathematics, Programming logic, and Database design.

About the lesson

When I work with a new student I like to discuss the areas in which they are struggling, to have a better understanding of how I can help.

I ask that any materials (homework, classwork, etc.) be emailed to me ahead of time, so that I can prepare a lesson plan and have them ready to use during the session.

I have worked with students from pre-school through college, and with adults.

I also have experience teaching special needs children, including children who are gifted, and who have ADHD.

Math is about having a good understanding of a few fundamental concepts. Once you break down a Math problem and gain understanding of it's basic components, you will find that the problem is quite easy to solve.

While working as a substitute teacher I was deeply touched by the young elementary school children who would give me a drawing with kind messages at the end of the day. It made me feel good that I had a positive influence on their learning. The most memorable message that I received was from a 2nd grader, who was struggling at the beginning of the class, and at the end of the day she gave me a drawing of myself with hearts and the words "you are the best teacher."
