About Erica

I have a passion for seeing others succeed in areas they find challenging. I have tutored Elementary, Middle, and High School math for 10+ years. I have a B.S. degree from UCLA in Applied Math and have a natural apptitude for understanding and teaching complex mathematical ideas. I have students that were C students in Math that progressed to A students in only a few months under my instruction. I also have experience working with special needs students. I look forward to helping you work through your challenges!

I love helping students change areas of struggle into doable challenges with a little guidance. Sometimes the solution is simple, like adopting a reasonable study schedule. Other times it is a little more involved, but with some time and effort I believe all students can be rewarded by acheiving goals they once were unable to accomplish.

I taught gymnastics as one of my earliest teaching jobs and loved the interaction with young athletes and being a part of their progress. After that experience, I decided to pursue a career as a teacher. I completed a teaching credential in 2001 and during that time discovered that one-on-one tutoring was my passion. That is when I became a private tutor and have been enjoying this work for over 10 years.

I have a B.S. in Applied Math and an elementary teaching credential from Metropolitan State University of Denver.

About the lesson

We begin by talking about what areas this student feels the most challenged by, whether it is time management, test strategies, organization, certain concepts, or all of the above. Then we set up a plan of action to tackle all of the challenges in a way that is most productive for the particular student. We create a set of goals to measure our progress. We make sure the student is satisfied that all goals and areas of struggle are being addressed.

I have worked with elementary, middle school and high school students. Additionally, I have experience working with special needs students.

I would strongly advise the student to hire someone who has strong credentials AND who the student feels a connection with. A strong rapport and a feeling of connection are vital to the student/teacher relationship. I have had the most success with students who fealt they could understand how I explained things very easily, and those were students who I happened to have something in common with.

During the past few weeks, the novel coronavirus, or COVID-19, has drastically changed the lives of people across the globe. Many random acts of kindness have been performed by people in an effort to keep morality high and bring optimism and strength during an otherwise challenging time. Some of these kind acts have been made by children. When a four-year-old boy was forced to cancel his birthday party due to social distancing restrictions, his friends came up with a brilliant idea to boost his spirits. They set up a sign outside his house that stated, "Honk for the birthday boy!" so passers by could all be a part of his birthday celebration. When these very young children came together to lift the spirits of a young friend, it was a reminder that children are our teachers too!

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students should think about when they feel anxiety about the particular subject (ie. Is it during class when the teacher is explaining the concepts, at home doing homework, during exams, etc.). This will help the student identify areas of struggle so teachers can help them come up with strategies for success.
