About Isaiah

I am currently studying college level mathematics, and it is often very difficult. So it is easy for me to empathize with math students who are struggling. Since I am learning math every day, I know what it takes to master new concepts and improve at problem solving.

I love seeing my work pay off. When a concept does not make sense to a student, I enjoy the challenge of trying to figure out how to make it make sense. I find it very satisfying to observe a student's confusion transform into understanding.

I had a friend who tutored in other subjects, and she asked me to tutor her students in math.

I have tutored middle school and high school students in pre-algebra, algebra, geometry and SAT math. I am also studying math at college.

About the lesson

I start by asking the student to work on a math problem, typically either from a homework assignment or from a practice exam. If the student does not know how to begin, I will explain the first step. If the student gets stuck in the middle of the problem, I will give them hints about how to proceed. If the student can complete the problem without my help, I will wait until they are finished and then point out any mistakes they might have made. In my experience, students learn math best when they are encouraged to work through problems themselves. It hones their ability to think analytically about numbers. My role is to guide them and help them when they are stuck, not to lecture them or do their work for them. Some students learn more efficiently when I take a more hands on approach, and others work best when I take more of a back seat. So when I begin working with a new student, I try to figure out what their learning style is, and I adjust my approach accordingly.

I've worked with students between the ages of 12 and 18. Some struggled to grasp mathematical concepts, some struggled to pay attention, some had fallen behind and needed help catching up, and some just needed a little extra motiviation. Each student requires a different approach, so I adjust my style of teaching according to the student's style of learning.

Look for a tutor who is patient with his or her students but also pushes them to do their best.
