About John

I am a PhD candidate in Biostatistics in Seattle, and I have tutored students across a range of high school and college level mathematics and statistics topics, including, but not limited to calculus, statistics, linear algebra, and geometry. I have also been a teaching assistant for mulltiple college level statistics courses. I graduated summa cum laude from Georgetown University in 2017, and received an award at graduation for showing the highest proficiency in Mathematics among my class.

I am currently a graduate student pursuing a PhD in Biostatistics. I have taken advanced courses in Statistical Theory and Applied Statistics. I graduted Summa Cum Laude from Georgetown University with a BS in Mathematics and Statistics in 2017.

I have been formally tutoring students since 2015 (though I offered less formal tutoring to friends / family members for years before that). Additionally, I was a teaching assistant for a college level Probability & Statistics course.

About the lesson

I like to have an introductory meeting with any potential clients before committing to anything. At this meeting, we will cover specific topics the client would like to focus on, their learning goals, and how many hours (supervised and unsupervised) they have available for study to meet those goals. If I believe that we would be a good match, we would then work to set up a tutoring schedule to meet the above goals.

Once I have begun tutoring a student, I like to take a practical approach to tutoring. I typically ask my students to complete a handful of problems before each session on their own, then we begin each session walking through those problems and identifying any concepts the student needs help with. I then offer a thorough review of those concepts, and will often walk through 1-2 practice problems with my student to emphasize the concepts in practice. Finally, I will ask my student to complete 1-2 problems on their own to confirm they understand the material.

I really appreciate ongoing feedback from my students on what is / is not working, and I happily tweak my tutoring approach to work with my students as successfully as possible.

I have worked with high school, college, and graduate students of varying mathematics skill levels.

I work with my students to develop a plan that meets their budget. My typical tutoring price is $50/hour, but, in the past, I have offered discounted hourly rates for students willing to commit to a large quantity of hours (e.g., more than 10 hours) in advance.
