About Joshua

I've been teaching and tutoring since 2012. I've worked in public schools, private schools, group tutoring, one on one tutoring, before and after school programs, and enrichment classes with students from K-College. Some of the schools, organization and businesses I have worked for are Citizen Schools, Houstin ISD, Lemon Grove ISD, Club Xcite, La Jolla LearkingWorks, Francis Parker and Digital Gym. What I enjoy most is helping students grow in confidence and skills in their ability to become independent learners and thinkers. My strenght is making personal connections with students and treating them as individuals and not objects of learning. I strive to make education real and exciting, not static and routine.

I started through working for AmeriCorps and the non profit Citizen Schools in Houston, Texas. I began working with 6th and 7th grade students.

I was trained through Citizen Schools, a non profit in Boston, on how to communicate and manage student learning and behavior. I worked in lower income public schools in Houston Texas for 2 years before moving to San Diego. In San Diego, I partnered with a two private companies, Club Xcite and La Jolla LearningWorks to expand my teaching experience to small group and private 1-1 tutoring.

About the lesson

I begin by having open conversation with the parent to learn from them about the students. What are strengths, challenges, interests, goals, learning history, etc. Then I meet with students and my first priority is to establish trust and rapport. It's important to meet the student as a person and not just a student. Then we begin to dissect the academic goals and areas of improvement.

I have honestly worked with with all types. I have worked with students K-college, public schools, and private schools.

Ask the tutor questions to make sure they are a good fit for your personality. Learning is an individual experience, it is not just academic and material.

I worked with high school students to make a short documentary on refugees defining what home means to them. It was a transformational experience because the students learned filmmaking skills and also connected with people and their culture from around the world.
