About Lydia

My name is Lydia and I am a high school student who has been tutoring younger students in math and English since 2015. I was placed in gifted programs throughout elementary school, skipped 6th grade, and completed AP Calculus AB as a sophomore in high school. In addition to that, I am one of the co-founders of Radiant Readers ((concealed information) offering free, online English tutoring to students in grades K-6 and manage all of the student level placement testing.

My father, who has a PhD degree in Chemistry, is a college professor, and has extensive experience tutoring various levels of math and science, is also available for tutoring.

I began by helping 3rd grade students with math when I was in 4th grade-- I took math classes with the 5th graders, so when they went on field trips, I was often sent down to help 3rd grade students struggling with math. In 5th grade, I began tutoring kids from China in reading-- helping them sound out words, learn new vocabulary, and testing their comprehension. Each student I taught increased my teaching experience and I developed many effective methods to teach various concepts.

I was placed in gifted programs throughout elementary school, skipped 6th grade, and have taken the hardest, most challenging classes available to me. Most recently, I took AP Calculus AB and scored a 5 on the exam as a sophomore in high school.

About the lesson

I usually begin by asking the parents what their goals are and talking to the student about what they have been struggling (or doing well) with. Then, I do some basic testing (I usually write my own math tests based on what classes the student has taken and I have a set reading/speaking testing system that I have used for dozens of students) to figure out where my student is at before working out a custom tutoring plan with the family.

I have worked with students ages 5-13 in math and English. Most of my English students are from China or Taiwan as I speak fluent Mandarin Chinese, but I have also worked with special needs students and students who are just slightly behind grade level or simply want to get ahead. With math, I have mainly worked with elementary and middle school students, but I have also worked with some of my fellow high school students who are struggling (I usually don't count that as tutoring though).

Details

I usually charge $30-40/hour depending on what I am being asked to teach. For example, homework help and unit test preperation is cheaper than creating a custom summer curriculum to review or teach an entire subject. Rates are negotiable if you pay for multiple sessions in advance.
