About Carly
My name is Carly. I have been teaching 4th grade in Virginia for three years. I have a bachelor's degree in Sociology with a minor in Elementary Education. In 2015, I spent time abroad as an intern for a 2nd grade teacher at ACS Cobham International School. In 2016, I spent 4 months student teaching alongside the "2016 Virginia Teacher of The Year."
In addition to teaching, I have a passion for tutoring. While I waited to start my teaching job in the fall of 2017, I worked as a "Response to Intervention" (RTI) tutor. I worked with students in a one to one environment. Seeing the shift in mindset when a child finally understands a topic makes every second of this job worthwhile.
My goal as a teacher and tutor is to help children learn to love learning. The greatest thing about my job is watching that light flicker to a bright glow, and see the student's confidence grow as he/she becomes a lifelong learner.
I always knew I wanted to be a teacher. When I got to college, I realized how many opportunities there were in other fields, and found myself questioning. In my Education 101 course, I was assigned service hours tutoring at a local after-school program. Working with those children solidified my decision to become a teacher.
I have been teaching 4th grade for three years.

At this time, I am only conducting virtual tutoring sessions through "Zoom" or "Google Meets." While working with a new student, I will first get to know their interests. Involving interests in content area lessons is vital for instilling a love of learning. Next, we will discuss which subjects to focus on. From there, we will dive deeper into the strands that the child finds most challenging.
I have primarily worked with students ranging from 2nd to 5th grade, with some experience substituting in the younger grades.
This past year, I had one student who stood out as having issues with displaying positive behaviors. She also struggled in spelling. Together we decided that each Friday we would eat lunch in the classroom to study the words. Her spelling scores improved and I had the opportunity to learn what a cool kid she is.
