About Peter

17 years experience. Oxford University doctorate in Engineering Physics. More than 150 students tutored, ranging from local high school to Ivy league universities.

The opportunity to pass on my math skills to the next generation of students. The personal reward and satisfaction that comes from helping students, especially those experiencing difficulties due to poor quality teaching. I also enjoy meeting and working with people from varied backgrounds, ethnicities and cultures.

After retiring from industry, I wanted to spend my time on something valuable and rewarding. Math tutoring is a natural extension of my mathematical background. I have a lifelong interest in mathematics and I enjoy helping people by sharing my skills.

BS Honors in Applied Physics. PhD from Oxford University - thesis: Materials for Rocket Engines. 20 years tutoring experience of students from High schools, Private schools, Community Colleges, and Universities. Retired Engineering Vice President of Aerospace company.

About the lesson

1 - Assess the students' skill level and aptitude

2 - Identify areas of weakness

3 - Agree a schedule, frequency and duration

4 - Provide ongoing support: email, text, phone - there is no extra charge for this

The youngest was 8 years old (at Princeton Day School); the oldest was an 80-year retired Physician (who wanted to pursue math as a hobby!)

My students have ranged from exceedingly bright to those that should not be taking math - my approach with the latter is to get them placed on a different course.

Look for a tutor who can explain the "why" of mathematics and not just the "what" - this is the single most important problem with present-day math teaching. Teaching the "what" is easy, but makes the subject sterile, disconnected, and does not promote understanding. Teaching the "why" puts all of the material into perspective and illustrates the connections between the various topics - this is key to success with math.
