About Imani

I have worked as teacher for the NYC DOE for 7 years. I am currently a math special education teacher for grades 7-12. I currently teach at a high school in Queens - Algebra 1 and Algebra 2 which is grades 9-11. I have worked on one with my students in my self contained classes hall students who have IEPs) to ensure they having a passing rate on their Regents exams as well with the students in my general education classrooms (where only a few students have IEPs). My students love my down to earth approach to math and the energy I have in the classroom which makes math a little bit more fun for them. Being comfortable with asking for help and setting the tone for what I expect from my students allows my lessons to flow and students to feel they can freely make mistakes knowing I will address how to correct those errors so that they may learn from it before moving on to the next problem.

I was working as an after school counselor for about 3 years prior to teaching and that is what drove me to go back to school to get my Master's to teach.

I have a masters degree in Special Education and a Bachelor's in Psychology. I have been teaching for 6+ years and working with students for almost 10 years.

About the lesson

Getting to know the student on a personal level, their interests, what subjects they find difficult, how they feel about school, etc.

Students of many different cultures and backgrounds and I've worked with students as young as 7 years old to students as old as 20 years old. I also have a 4 year old daughter that just started school.

I would say make sure you are comfortable with the tutor and they listen to what it is you need, it maybe hard to judge in one session but a tutor that has patience is lao helpful.

Details

I charge $60 an hour, it is about what I get paid per hour to work after school. If I am needed for 2 hours or more, a discount will be provided.
