About Derek

Being an individual student athlete allows me to make a connection with my students and understand their needs. I'm not part of an organization and am flexible when it comes to payment and time. I'm personable and do my best for everyone to feel comfortable and prepared to learn. I have experience working with all ages and a plentiful amount of subjects across the board.

I enjoy helping other people, especially with something that is very close to my heart, education. Since I'm currently a student I find myself learning new things everyday, and I hope to pass on my experience to others in order to help them succeed. I'm very driven by goals and believe any student can acheive their academic goals with hard work and determination. I'm excited to work with all students any age to support their education career, whether it's just starting or near finishing.

I started tutoring when I was a sophomore in highschool and haven't stopped since. My Aunt and Uncle both are high school teachers and connected me with students that needed assistance in their educational journey. I mainly started because of my love for education, especially math, and wanted to share it with others who may not have it.

I'm currently a First Year Student at Vassar College. I have a 3.8 GPA and am planning on double majoring in Economics and Japanese. I took all math honors courses in highschool as well as AP Calculus AB and AP Statistics, finishing with a 4.5 GPA. Completed Calculus 1 and currently finishing Calculus 2 at Vassar College. I have tutored multiple students to reach their educational goals and have stayed connected with them since coming to college (I'm from California).

About the lesson

I like to get an understanding of who the student is personally and their tendencies when it comes to learning. I like to become friends and make a connection with new students so nothing falls through the cracks with nervousness. Then I will help create goals, short and long term, that we can track our progress.

I have worked with both middle school and high school students. I am capable of working with students of younger age. I often take care of my 3 and 6 year old neice and nephew and often work with educational material with them.

My advice would be to find someone you are able to relate to. A tutor/teacher should not be someone who you are scared of or frustrated when working with. With math in particular it is important to find someone with experience to the point where they can explain problems from a multitude of perspectives.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Before talking to their teacher, think what problem you are trying to solve? Are my grades bad? Am I confused about current topics? With that information you can ask a thoughtful question to your teacher so you can work together to solve the problem.

1 Hour Session - $20

Open flexibility and pricing will be consistent with time. For example a 45 minute session (shorter duration) would be equivalent to $15.

I'm very open to discussion about time alotments and payment plans.
