About Arnelle

I'm Arnelle! I'm a recent graduate of Carnegie Mellon University with a self-defined degree in Technology and Humanistic Studies. In my collegiate career, I've taken several math and science classes, but my love for humanities and the arts never let me stick to just that. I enjoy helping students understand material because I used to be the student who needed a little extra explaining. I take a very empathetic approach to tutoring. I try to meet my students where they are and present the material in a way that is easily digestible. The most important thing to me is that my students gain the confidence to think through problems, even if they encounter a few obstacles along the way.

I taught several robotics classes for children in grades 3-10. Being in that environment helped me develop my skill of teaching information to children of many learning levels. Those children all came at different starting points, but I had to get them to understand the same material so we could stay on track. That taught me patience and helped me learn how to identify and cultivate the potential in all children.

In my college math courses, I ended up using a lot of the high school math that has everyone asking "what am I going to use this for" when we learn it in high school. Learning cool applications for seemingly boring math helps me better understand it. I love sharing those moments with my students because it helps them see the exciting material hiding behind the surface of their work.

While I've been tutoring and teaching in many capacities over the years, last year, I tutored for a family with 3 children. Two of the children were in middle school, and one was in high school. I helped each child improve their writing skills according to their grade level, but also pushed them to see why being an effective communicator is important. My approach is to help them learn how to write formulaically, but also to convey their emotions and arguments in an appropriate way.

I know this is a hectic time for us all, so I want to lend a helping hand so children can thrive in spite of the unconventionality of their schooling.
