About Joy

Hello, my name is Ms. Joy and I am so excited to be your tutor! I specialize in mathematics but am happy to tutor any subject. I am a fun and energetic teacher and would love to bring that energy to your student's computr screen. I enjoy using manipulatives and games to make learning fun. I place a strong emphasis on learning math concepts as well as process.

I have more than 5 years experience in the classroom and I truly love it! I started as an assistant teacher and I am now an apprentice math teacher, woking in small intervention groups and whole class settings. I am in my last semester of graduate school and will be recieving a Masters in Elementary Education. I come from a long line of teachers and I have a real passion for education!

I am looking to tutor your child this summer. The summer slide is real, and it is important, now more than ever, to keep your students skills sharp!

Looking forward to working with you!

Ms. Joy

I love seeing students confidence improve! Math can be a really sore spot for kids and it warms my heart to see them go from "I just can't do math!" to "Math doesnt scare me!"

I started after college when I was looking for some purpose in my life. I volunteered for a program called City Year that provides students in city schools with acedemic and emotional support, in an effort to prevent them from dropping out of school. After working in the classroom for that year I was  certain that I wanted to continue teaching!

I am in my last semester of graduate school. I will soon have a  MA in Elementary Education, with a certification in general and special education. I have a 3.91 GPA if that matters to you!

I have also been an assistant and apprentice teacher for 5 years. In these rolls I have been writing lesson plans, creating personalized intervention plans for students, teaching small groups and performing formal and informal assessments. I believe in a hands on, and fun approach to learning!

I like ot find out about the student's likes and dislikes first. Kids learn best when they feel like thier teacher cares about them, so I like to start with a more casual conversation about who they are as a person before we move on to learning.

I have worked with all kinds of students! I work in a public charter school in North Philadelphia and the population of that school very diverse. I have expierience with students who have special needs and emotional disturbances as well.

I would advise students look for a teacher who seems fun but knowledgable. I would also tell them that it is important to find a teacher who understands the online resources available right now!

Online learning has not been easy to adjust to but I am having fun with some of the resources out there! Every day I host an intervention group. It's always fun to play math games with them. On occasion I let them take control of the meeting, share their screen and teach the other students on thier own. It is so fun for them and brings the group closer!

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
During the school day, when do I feel the most frustrated?

Why do I feel so frustrated during that time?

What subjects do I realy like?

Why are they so fun to me?

Who is my favorite teacher and why do I like them so much?
