About Larry

I was a full-time Math instructor at Waukesha County Technical College for 15 years, and am still teaching part-time, since my retirement. My students gave me very good ratings on the end-of-course evaluations.

Prior to that, I had years of experience in business and industrial settings, and I saw how important Math is in any workplace.

I have always enjoyed helping individuals who want to improve their understanding, and have been told that I am very good at explaining things

I have taught a variety of courses, many that were "individualized." When students had trouble, and needed help, I tried to determine their sticking points and take them forward from that point. This seemed to be a very effective and efficient method. I would expect that students who are looking for tutors will benefit most from this focus.

It is always rewarding to see a student's eyes light up during those "aha" moments of learning.

After 15 years as a manufacturing engineer and as a supervisor, I had an opportunity to move into a technical college position. That later led to a transfer into the Math Department.

In manufacturing, I often had the chance enhance the skills of those working in the shop or support areas, and I enjoyed that aspect of my work.

I was a full-time Math teacher for 15 years before retiring, and am now teaching part-time.

About the lesson

I am just starting as a tutor, so I don't have a "typical process" yet.

But, in working with students, I would focus on what they were having problems with, and listent as they described how they got to the point they were at. I would, at the same time, recall the most common bottlenecks, and the clarifications that students found the most helpful.

My students were enrolled in Industrial, Business, Health Care and other programs. I am looking forward to working with students at other levels who are interested in building a good foundation in Math.

Students should try to get help early in the semester, if they realize they are falling behind or if they have looked ahead and have seen some roadblocks ahead of them.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
If possible, students should reflect on their particular situation before talking to prospective tutors.

- what parts of the subject were easy for me to understand?
- at what point did I realize things were getting difficult?
