About Jaan

I'm an experienced teacher who loves math, and I'm comfortable working with a large age range. I'm a Mathematics and Integraged Mathematics Education major at Miami University, and I'm currently student teaching. I also have two summers of experience as a summer camp counselor at Lakeview Ministries in Seymour Indiana, as well as more than 7 years of informal experience teaching Sunday School. I very much enjoy working with kids and doing math! I love seeing the lightbulb click with a difficult concept, and seeing the slow but steady progress that comes with good practice. I feel that my students can find great satisfaction by working consistently and improving in anything. I'm especially passionate about fostering and guiding that improvement in mathematics.

I started by teaching Sunday School at my church throughout high school. This piqued my curiosity to try majoring in education at college. I loved it, and continued up up to this point.

I'm in my senior year studying Math and Integrated Math Education at Miami University in Oxford. I'm student teaching in a high school this semester. I spent two summers as an overnight camp counselor for grades 3-12. I also have over 7 years of informal experience teaching Sunday School. I'm very comfortable with students, teaching math, and explaining difficult concepts.

About the lesson

I'll start out by assessing my student's current math knowledge. I'll get an idea of what they're currently learning, and which parts of it are most confusing. Then, I'll zero in on a particular assignment or set of notes and walk through it with them, answering questions and explaining things where needed. Gradually, I answer less and listen more, as the student begins to make more sense out of the material.

In a camp setting, I have worked with children as young as third grade and as old as seniors in high school. In the classroom, I have worked with seventh graders through senior in high school through my field experiences and student teaching.
