About Maria

I'm a cultural journalist, artist and postgraduate student in History of Art that is looking to come back to tutoring. With both my parents being mathematicians, I grew up teaching kids in my class and area as well as my little cousins. Whilst in College, I made my pocket money by tutoring children from 6 to 16 in all subjects, which is when I realised that the key to learning is to Learn How to Learn. Having taught dance since I was 12 to anyone younger than me, I learnt how to get children engaged and make them curious about the world around them. Because is it not a wonder that we know all of this? Is it not incredible how many things humanity has made up and how many ideas we’ve had through millennia?

Having finished college in Sweden with straight A:s, where I studied the Natural Science Programme and extended it to encompass humanities (social science, history, literature and language), I moved to London to study History at King’s College London. Here, I learnt the UK education inside out, both out of curiosity and to catch up with my class mates who had spent the last four years learning history while I was learning sciences. I graduated with a First, having written two dissertations in intellectual history, and went on to study History of Art and/or Archeology at the one university I found to be open to a comparative and global approach - SOAS. On the side, I’ve been working as a researcher and cultural journalist whilst putting up art exhibitions and working as a chef. Learning doesn’t have to be dull - not if you find the way of learning that suits you. This, in fact, is something that can be taught - not something you either have or not have.

I have never thought of studying as a long, slow process. My parents taught me it should be fun and exciting, so that’s how I made it. I used to listen to courses on ancient civilisations and philosophies when falling asleep, and passed my exams thanks to books I read at night instead of the ones assigned in class. I’m the tutor for you if you’re looking to make things interesting, to actually understand WHY something is rather than learn it all by heart. I’m the tutor for you if you want to pass your exams easily and creatively instead of going through the last minute stress and anxiety.

I have taken a qualification in training children in physical education and cultural activities in Sweden, but most of my knowledge is experience-based: I have grown up teaching and tutoring the children in my area and extended family. I also grew up in an academic family, so pedagogy was something very much spoken about.

In terms of the topics themselves, I graduated from College with straight A:s, went on to get a First in History at King's College London and am now in the very final weeks of my MA in History of Art. I've worked as researcher and publishing assistant for essay collections, and am a published cultural journalist.
