About Max

I have taking the highest level math courses throughout elementary, middle, high school, and college, and I am pursuing an Applied Mathematics minor as a result of my passion for the subject. I am proficient in all maths ranging from Algebra I to multivariable calculus to linear algebra. Regarding my experience, I am a volunteer computer science tutor at UC Davis and have been offered a paid position as a mathematics tutor next fall. I also have experience tutoring ages 13-20 in math outside of UC Davis.

Tutoring creates the perfect atmosphere to foster a two-way relationship between a tutor and their tutee. The tutee can always rely on the tutor to help them in dire situations, and the tutor can always rely on the tutee to ask questions and be curious about the subject. Both parties personalize their styles of learning to fit one another and grow together. I've succeeded in school largely due to my knowledge of mathematics, and I hope to enlighten others about its beauty and usefulness in the world, while learning from their inquries and questions as well.

I naturally got exposed to teaching when my friends needed help and came to me for answers. I found it ineffective to provide solutions, so I started fostering my explanation skills as a better approach.

I am pursuing a Computer Science and Engineering degree, as well as an Applied Mathematics minor. I have been a volunteer CS tutor at UC Davis for my peers in subjects I have done well in, and I have gotten offered a paid math tutoring position for next fall. Prior to college, I have tutored Calc II and CS to my peers in school, mathematics to students in middle school, and mathematics to my little brother who is in elementary school.

About the lesson

The student should involve themselves in the problem solving process by incessantly trying various approaches to a problem. Learning from one’s mistakes and trying new strategies is the beauty of mathematics. However, when a student is completely stuck, showing a few example problems and methods involved can get them on the right track. To check for understanding, I would test the student at the start of each session with a short problem summarizing the previous session’s work. If the student is struggling to keep up, the pace will have to slow down or supplementary work will be assigned.

Elementary, middle, high school, and college. My expertise lies within middle and high schoolers.

My advice would be to keep in mind that tutors who are familiar with the current school system are more effective than those who are not, simply because their methods of approaching a problem lines up with how it is taught at school and does not confuse the tutee. That is why professional tutoring organizations are highly sought after, but also why they are pricey.
