About Nancy

With an engineering background, I have been tutoring students in math for 20 years focusing on the basics and building students' math skills and confidence in practical and fun ways. Each tutoring session is tailored to the interests and needs of the individual student.

Although I enjoy seeing patterns and solving problems, when students catch on, they just light up with delight and pride in themselves. This is the real joy in tutoring. Students get to explore all sorts of math subjects and apply skills to real world issues.

Teaching came naturally to me. In grad school I was first paid a stipend to plan and present lessons to undergrads. I was even responsible for making up the tests. Later I was tapped to teach training courses to coworkers in industry. Then I began volunteering with various youth programs, and that evolved into tutoring math. I have also been substitute teaching for 11 years.

I earned a B.S. degree and an M.S. degree in Applied Mathematics. I taught undergrads while attending grad school. Then I taught co-workers in industry and began tutoring youth afterhours. I volunteered in my sons' schools for many years, and began substitute teaching 11 years ago. I seem to have an affinity for presenting material in ways that make sense to kids of all ages.

About the lesson

1) Warmup math game to relax the student's nerves and "turn the brain on to numbers." Ask about the day, what was fun or easy. 2) Seek student input about what he/she wants or needs to work on during the tutoring session, then follow through with that activity. 3) Cover other math concepts in creative ways, as time permits. 4) Cool down game that reinforces math skills.

I work with students of all ages, which I enjoy, and this also keeps my skills fresher. Most are in 4th - 12th grades. My youngest have been kindergarteners. I also work with adults who are going back to college and need to refresh their math skills. I cover all subjects through precalculus and trigonometry. I just don't do calculus often enough to keep the rust off, but the rest comes naturally to me.

Details

Students pay upon arrival at each tutoring session, and a receipt is supplied. This keeps the accounting simple. I am all about the math; not bookkeeping, invoicing, statements, etc.
