About Jake

I have had several (4+) years of experience tutoring in math, chemistry, physics, and writing, so I am able to bring many different perspectives to my teaching that may bring things to a level more understandable than what it would be otherwise. It is important for a tutor to be able to explain things in various terms to give the best chance for communicating core concepts of whatever topic is at hand.

I have always had a passion for knowledge. Throughout my tutoring career, seeing peoples' eyes light up when something finally clicks is what keeps me coming back. I love the process of learning, and specifically, I love to teach concepts and convey ideas. It is a satisfying thing to be able to leave the world a better and brighter place day by day because of the knowledge and encouragement I can give to students.

It began as a way for me to make some money as a college student, and I had such good luck with it that I was able to finish my undergraduate degree debt free.

While in my undergraduate study I had four years of math tutoring experience at various levels, two years of tutoring physics and chemistry, and a year and a half of experience tutoring writing.

Furthermore, I have both an undergraduate and graduate level degree. During my undergraduate studies, I served as the president of my universities honors program. That program diversified my study from just being one of hard sciences to one that included art, philosophy, and abstract thinking. Between my honors education and my education in chemistry and engineering, I have nearly seen it all!

About the lesson

I begin by figuring out exactly what someone is trying to gain from me. Is it confidence when taking tests? Is it learning the fundamentals of a new topic? Is it to make sure you're properly understanding the explainations you're given in your textbook? The reason is important in how I will construct a gameplan to get you where you're hoping to be. Once we get an understanding of what is desired from our tutoring sessions, I will make sure that I review whatever topics you specifically need help with and how best to assist you for any related tasks.

I have worked with students from half my age to twice my age. With such varied students I have also tutored people at all levels of education, whether tutoring undergrads as a graduate student or tutoring kids in grade school, I have had experience working with all age groups and all proficiencies.

The biggest tip I could give in hiring someone is to make sure that you hire someone with whom you can communicate well. The ability to have a dialogue and consicely relay information is a trait that not everyone has.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
The foremost thing I think students should think of before reaching out to teachers is what exactly they need. It is important for a student to understand precisely what they do and do not know to ensure that their time and effort is well spent working in the areas that need the most attention.

Details

I charge $30 for a one hour session. I don't charge by the hour, but by the session, so if it takes an extra five minutes to wrap up I won't add extra cost. I will also not charge for sessions that aren't centered around teaching, so for instance if we meet to plan dates and subjects to review, that won't be considered a session.
