I like to establish what specifically the student is having trouble wrapping their head around, and then proceeding to explain the subject in multiple different ways until the student can relate the topic to their everyday life and the information "clicks."
I have had the pleasure to work with all sorts of students from special education, regular, and advanced level/AP students.
Look for someone that is willing to keep explaining information in different ways until you feel like you understand it. If you can't rationalize it, you won't truly understand it, and it won't stick in your head after the test comes around! Make sure you find someone that is patient with you and keeps at it until you feel satisfied that you know the material.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
What specifically is confusing you? Instead of just saying "everything" or simply being unwilling to learn, find a specific point, one specific thing, that you don't understand, that is holding you back, and let's start with that before we move forward. It helps a lot to have a "jumping off point" at the beginning of a session to allow the tutor to gauge where you're at.
