About Cameron

I had two younger siblings in a single-parent household. My mother, Dr. Ingrid Byerly, is a Duke professor, and I received a her interest in teaching.

I began tutoring one-on-one students in the STAIR program, and served as Teacher's Assistant for Eastport Elementary School. I continued teaching after this for adults and children on Semester at Sea.

I have a degree from St. John's College with the credits for a major in history of mathematics. I was in upper-tier mathematics classes throughout my school years.

In my undergraduate classes, I worked through Euclidean geometry, Ptolemy's celestial mathematics, Liebniz's and Newton's discovery of Calculus (in the original texts), and Einstein's Relativity papers.

Full work experience available on attached resume.

A new student usually involves understanding their areas of frustration with mathematics (I was once at a point where I found math entirely opposed to my interests). It is possible to shift one's understanding of math to one of genuine interest rather than begrudging tolerance. I often take the first class to discuss one's previous relations with math, and take stock of what 'toolbox' of existing methods one has with which to address the subject one is doing.

At-risk elementary school students, high school math students, 'Lifelong Learners' (adult) students aboard Semester at Sea, TEDx Cincinnati audience.

Enthusiasm is enormously important in areas of mathematics. Math can often appear either too simple or frustratingly difficult to a struggling student, but with a teacher willing to play with and understand the difficulty of learning, math can be genuinely helpful in structuring a developing mind.

While teaching on Semester at Sea a few months back, I was able to meet and talk with Ron Stalworth, the famous first African-American police officer and detective in Colorado Springs who infiltrated the Ku Klux Klan. I attended a showing of the film based on his experience (BlackkKlansman) and spoke with his wife and him about the modern political landscape while looking at lemurs and exotic birds in Equador. It was a wonderful experience.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Simply being ready to take proper notes (which is a valuable skill to learn) to make sure that in the process of learning, a student would hypothetically be able to teach another student what they had just learned.
