About Jacob
I have tutored at Eastern Kentucky University for three years in both mathematics and physics all the way up to my graduation with a 4 year degree in general physics. My math experience ranges from tutoring basic arithmetic and algebra to things like calculus two.
In Physics, I tutored beginning classical mechanics problems having to do with projectile motion, rotational mechanics, and forces. As well, I also tutored electromagnetism concepts such as looking at forces caused by both magnetic and electrical fields as well as multiple physical phenomena due to these things.
Hearing students sound amazed that they actually are understanding something they thought they never would. Physics is a hard topic but it can always be understood with enough determination.
I got started when I was a sophomore in college looking for a job on campus. I wanted to use the math that I knew to help others and became a tutor in Eastern Kentucky University’s math department. Also, as I went through my major. I became a physics tutor after taking intermediate level physics classes about a year later.
As a tutor at Eastern Kentucky University, I have expierience working wth students in college for 3 years both in on track and remedial classes. I have had a multitude of experiences and seminars showing me how to show students things like: how to read and utilize a textbook, how to analyze and look at problems for important information, and showing that a topic can actually be a lot less complicated than it sounds. As well. I have a four year degree in general physics and have a lot of expierience with analytical problem solving in math and science.

When students ask me for help, I won’t necessarily go straight into what they work on. Math and physics topics have a lot of background to them and not understanding these topics can end in a harder understanding of what the student has trouble with. As a result I go back with the student and walk them through the topics, logic, and ideas up to where they need help.
As well, I don’t take “ I don’t know” as a proper answer. Getting a student to guess even if it’s completely out there can get them more involved in the subject at hand and better their overall attitude to the topic.
I have worked with college students going through both general education and demodulation course requirments in both math and physics.
The most important thing is to find someone who not only knows the material but someone who is passionate about their field. Just because someone can teach material doesn’t mean they’re the most helpful. A lot of the attatchment I had to my teacher had to do with their general attitude and demeanor behind their lessons. I had a much better experience listening to someone who actually cared about what they talked about.
The most recent event was my college graduation. Sitting with my class and knowing that I had accomplished something like obtain a degree in a field which explains the universe hit me pretty hard. I know I will put it to good use somehow and I can star by helping others understand better what I know.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
The questions students should ask are:
- What am I having the most trouble in?
- Where am I getting lost in this problem?
- What’s different from this problem from ones I know and understand?
- How can I ask about the problem in a way that relates to things talked about in class or what’s in my notes?
