About Nancy

I have taught literally thousands of students. I taught math to middle school students for 6 years. At that point I completed a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology and worked with adolescents as their therapist. I moved to California and they did not accept my Ph.D. so I took a job working with middle school students in an emotional support class. After 3 years, I moved to a teaching position working with learning disabled middle school students.

I also taught at IVY Tech University teach math and a variety of other classes.

I retired 6 months ago and now realize that I miss the contact with my students. Tutoring, on-line or in person, will help me reconnect with adolescents.

What I enjoy most about this type of work isa the contact with adolescents. I believe I have a great deal of patience and experience. What I have learned about teaching math is that there is probably more than one way to approach a problem. Sometimes it is the "less common" approach that will work for the student I am working with. I enjoy looking for that "less common" approach. It is a challenge that I like to conquer.

From the time that I was in junior high school I wanted to be a teacher. My choice of teaching math was based on the fact that I was good at it and I felt there would be a bigger need for a math teacher than many other disciplines.

I have a BS in math from Purdue. I have a MS in counseling and a Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the University of Maryland. Finally, I have a special education credential from San Jose State.

About the lesson

The most important things to do are to get to know them and find out how they perceive their problems.

I have taught math students in regular middle school classes. I have also taught in an emotion support class for middle school studnts. Finally, I have taught college students in their first and second years of college at IVY Tech. At Ivy Tech I taught some beginning college level math students. their class covered what would be equivalent to algebra one.

It is important for a student to have a connection with their teacher. They must not be afraid to ask questions or to request that the teacher show more examples of how to do something,

My fondest memory was when of my Hispanic students in San Jose was learning a very sytlized dance that he and other young men would do at his cousin's Quincenera. During one of the breaks in the class he performed it for me. It was beautiful. I felt priviledged to be "invited" into a piece of his life and his culture.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students should think through what they are having trouble with in their math class. They should also think about their learning style. If they think they need a tutor, why can't they learn from what is going on in class. For examp;e, do they hae trouble following what the teacher is putting on the board or do they need a more hands on approach?
